ALBANO, STEELE AND SIMONETTI HONORED AS RUNNERS OF THE WEEK
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Rob Albano of Felician College, Bill Steele of Wilmington University and Sarah Simonetti of Philadelphia University have been honored as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Runners of the Week on Oct. 3. Tim Malloy of Philadelphia and Luis Romero were named the Male Rookies of the Week, while Taylor Falvey of Philadelphia was selected Female Rookie of the Week.
Albano, a junior who hails from Pompton Plains, N.J., finished in second place in a huge field of 357 runners at the Lehigh Paul Short Run on Friday. He finished in an 8K time of 25:40 to lead the Golden Falcons to a second place finish in the Men's White Race.
Steele, a junior from Conowingo, Md., placed third in a field of 162 at the Salisbury Invitational, crossing in a school-record time of 25:03. He led the Wildcats to an eighth place finish as a team.
Malloy, a freshman from Haddonfield, N.J., finished in 26th place at the Paul Short Run in a time of 27:12. Romero, a freshman from Union City, N.J., was the individual champion at the 9-team Belmont Classic on Saturday, finishing in 28:10.
Simonetti, a senior from Perkasie, N.J., placed 45th among 386 runners at the Paul Short Run Brown Race in a time of 23:11. Falvey, a freshman from York, Pa., placed 13th at the Paul Short Run in a time of 24:11. She was the No. 3 runner for PhilaU.
Honorable Mention
Taylor Trumbetti, Felician (Jr., Montvale, NJ) - Placed 15th at the
Paul Short Run in a time of 26:48.
Althea Davidson, Wilmington (Fr., New Castle, DE) - Finished in
21st place at the Don Cathcart Invitational in a time of 23:23.
John Hill, Holy Family (So., Voorhees, NJ) - Finished in second
place at the Belmont Classic in 29:04.
CACC Cross Country Notes
Bloomfield - Bloomfield’s men’s cross country team ran
to a third-place finish at the Belmont Classic on Saturday, with
freshman phenom Luis Romero (Union City, N.J.) winning the
five-mile event with a time of 28:10.46 for the first meet victory
of his career. Romero has finished in the top ten in each of
Bloomfield’s meets this season. Moses Rotich (Lodi,
N.J.) posted the best finish of his junior season, placing sixth
with a time of 30:50.08. Senior Devang Patel (North Bergen,
N.J.) placed 11th with a time of 31:19.57, while Steven Bowman
(Attco, N.J.) placed 12th with a time of 31:37.48. On the
women’s side, freshman Catelin Perez (Union City, N.J.)
earned the first top-10 finish of her career in the three-mile
event, placing tenth with a time of 23:50.64. All four Lady
Deacon runners placed in the top 20, with the remaining three
finishing 17th, 18th and 19th respectively. Senior Mercy Puma
(Guttenberg, N.J.) placed 17th with a time of 25:07.09, while
Bertina Beaubrun (Asbury Park, N.J.) finished 18th with a time of
25:09.84. Vanessa Lamison (Laurel, Md.) placed 19th with a
time of 25:19.67.
Concordia - The Clippers’ men’s cross-country team took
a week off to prepare for the Highlander Cross-Country Invitational
which will take place at Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ on Sunday
October 9th. For the women, Shelley Monahan placed a team best 13th
at the Belmont Classic on Saturday.
Felician - Junior Rob Albano broke his own school 8K record at the
Lehigh Paul Short Run Friday. Albano finished second out of 357
entrants with a 25:40. Albano, still the only runner in program
history to break 26 minutes, had clocked a 25:54 at NYIT as a
freshman. Felician, ranked 10th regionally, placed second as a team
out of 42 schools in the College White Race. Saint Rose, the team
immediately ahead of the Golden Falcons in the regional ranking,
was 14th. All eight FC runners clocked season-low times on the flat
course.
Georgian Court - Isalin Howard (R-Fr) has been the Lions’ top
finisher in all four of GCU’s meets this season. The Lions
return to action on October 15th when they compete in the CTC
Championships.
Philadelphia - The Philadelphia University women took 28th place at
the Brown Race at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh on Friday.
Senior Sarah Simonetti finished 45st overall to record the fastest
time of the day for a CACC runner. The Ram men took 11th place at
the 2011 Paul Short run. Junior Alfred “Kip” Kirui
finished 22nd overall in the race, while teammate Tim Malloy (26th)
finished in the top fifty overall.
