AIFUWA AND BURCHAM NAMED TO USTFCCCA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

February 13, 2008

NEW HAVEN, CT-Joy Aifuwa of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Danielle Burcham of Wilmington University have been named to the 2007 NCAA Division II U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team.

This is Aifuwa's third consecutive selection to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team, having earned the honor in 2005 and 2006. She is the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) athlete to earn this honor three times. Thirty-three runners from the East Region were named amongst the 202 total athletes earning the honor. Burcham garnered the honor for the first time. She is just the second Wilmington runner to earn the accolade.

To qualify for this honor an individual must have a cumulative grade point average through the semester of competition of a 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. An athlete must have competed in at least 50% of their teams' cross country competitions, and finish in the top 30% at the NCAA Regional meet. The individual's coach must also be a member of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Aifuwa, a pharmacy major with a 3.43 grade point average, completed her fourth and final season of competition this fall for the Devils. She competed in six regular-season meets and finished no lower than fourth place in five of the six, including a first-place finish at the Belmont Classic, the second time in three years she has won the event. Aifuwa also recorded second-place finishes at the Delaware Valley College Invitational and Philadelphia Metro Championships. At the CACC Championships, Aifuwa finished in second place, becoming the first CACC women's cross country performer to earn All-Conference honors in each of her four seasons of competition.

Burcham, a studio production and broadcast journalism major with a 3.85 grade point average, completed her second season of competition this fall for the Wildcats. She finished in the top 10 every race she participated in except for one, in which she finished in 11th place. At the CACC Championships, Burcham finished fifth, helping the Wildcats to a third-place finish. She concluded her season with a 45th place finish at the NCAA East Regionals.
