NEW HAVEN, CT - Katie Hornback of Holy Family University has
garnered Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference (CACC) Volleyball Player of the Week honors
for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 18. Michelle Fiorvanti of
Dominican College was the choice for Rookie of the Week.
Hornback, a 5-10 sophomore outside hitter from Indianapolis, IN, led the Tigers to a 3-1 week with averages of 3.54 kills at a .330 hitting percentage, along with 1.92 digs, 0.31 blocks and 0.23 service aces per-game. She registered 16 kills and 10 digs against Goldey-Beacom and 12 kills and eight digs versus Bloomfield.
Fiorvanti, a 5-9 freshman outside hitter from Commack, NY, averaged 3.90 kills at a .281 hitting percentage, 2.20 digs and 0.30 blocks per-game in a 3-0 week for the Lady Chargers. She posted match-high totals of 16 kills against Caldwell and 14 at Wilmington.
Honorable Mention
Joann Zayas, Georgian Court (Sr., 5-5, OH/DS, Naranjito, PR) - Registered 2.8 kills, 2.8 digs and 0.46 blocks per-set in a 3-1 week.
Celena Rendon, Philadelphia (Sr., OH, 5-9, San Antonio, TX) - Averaged 2.92 kills and 4.42 digs in a 2-2 week.
Amber Dora, Felician (Jr., OH/OPP, 5-6, Little Ferry, NJ) - Averaged 4.38 kills and 4.75 digs per-game in four matches.
Taylor Doyle, Post (So., S, 5-6, Mystic, CT) - Averaged 9.50 assists and 2.50 digs per-game in three matches.
CACC Notes
Bloomfield - Bloomfield finished 1-3 last week, with the victory coming against Concordia for the team's fifth CACC victory of the season. Senior Ursula Pereira totaled 61 kills in the four matches, including 27 in a 3-1 loss to Caldwell.
Caldwell - The Cougars defeated Bloomfield in four sets on Tuesday before falling to Dominican on the road, 3-1 on Thursday. The defeat ended Caldwell's five-match winning streak and was the first loss to a CACC North Division opponent this season. Cory Roesing recorded double-doubles in both matches, tallying 10 kills and a season-high 19 digs at Bloomfield, and 10 kills and 12 digs at Dominican. The Cougars host Felician, Nyack and USP in CACC matches this week.
Dominican - Dominican is on a seven-match win streak, which is its longest of the season. Earlier in the season, the Lady Chargers had a five-match streak. DC is having its best season in seven years, having an overall record above .500 along with an 11-3 conference mark.
Felician - Junior OH/Opp Amber Doran set a school record with 28 kills in a four-set home win over Chestnut Hill on Saturday. Also in that match, junior S Nicole Degenhardt and junior L Erica Moore set program bests for a four-set match with 50 assists and 30 digs, respectively. Doran has double-doubles in five consecutive matches and eight of her last nine.
Georgian Court - The Georgian Court volleyball squad saw its
33-game home winning streak come to an end, dating back to the 2007
season, Saturday afternoon as the Lions fell to the #1 team in the
East Region, Dowling College, 3-1, in the GCU Wellness Center. The
loss also marks Georgian Court's first-ever in "The Well" (24
straight wins), which opened its doors in August, 2008. However,
the Lions were able to extend its winning streak vs. CACC opponents
to 63 straight victories with a 3-0 pasting of top-rival
Philadelphia University in the day's opening match.
Goldey-Beacom -Freshman Monica Dempsey and sophomore Roni Shaner
each recorded triple-doubles in the 3-1 win over Chestnut Hill on
Thursday. Dempsey had 15 kills, 24 assists and 24 digs, and Shaner
had 12 kills, 17 assists and 14 digs.
Holy Family - Holy Family went 3-1 last week to move its overall record to 11-17 overall. The Tigers picked up wins against Goldey-Beacom, Bloomfield and Queens. The lone loss came to Georgian Court. Holy Family visits Wilmington on Tuesday and hosts Post on Saturday.
Philadelphia - It was a 2-2 week for the Lady Rams, who defeated
Wilmington University and University of the Sciences, but fell to
conference rival Georgian Court and a tough Dowling opponent. The
highlight of the week was a 3-0 victory over Wilmington. Upcoming
matches this week include two conference matches against Caldwell
College (10/19) and at Bloomfield College (10/24). The team will
also play Southern Connecticut State at Bloomfield.
USP - In last week's CACC statistics reports junior middle
blocker Christine Puschak (Leola, Pa.) was leading the CACC in
kills, averaging 3.12/set while junior setter Sarah Hickman
(Newark, Del.) leads the CACC in assists, averaging 9.04/set.
Senior Kirsten Lechner (Wayne, N.J.) continued her steady climb up
the USP all-time statistical lists this week, becoming just the
10th player to record 500 career kills, reaching the milestone
against Philadelphia Univ.- she now has 514 and ranks 9th on the
Devils all-time list. Lechner also became the eighth volleyball
player in school history to record 100 career aces, reaching the
mark with six vs. Concordia, giving her 101 for her career. She
also moved into sixth place on the Devils all-time digs list,
recording 55 this week to give her 862 for her career. Puschak
moved into a tie for 4th place on the Devils all-time aces list
with 139 for her career. Junior middle blocker Cady Rich (Shelton,
Conn.) had 16 kills vs. Millersville and again vs. Concordia and
now has 629 for her career, becoming just the fifth women's
volleyball player in school history to reach 600 career kills.
Freshman Stacey Wooden (Levittown, Pa.) recorded her 14th
consecutive match with double-digit kills with 11 vs. Concordia.
The Devils are back home this week taking on Goldey-Beacom College
on Tuesday, before traveling to Georgian Court and Caldwell on
Thursday and Saturday.
