GEORGIAN COURT AND PHILADELPHIA SET TO CLASH FOR CACC VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
LAKEWOOD, NJ (November 13, 2009) - Georgian Court University and Philadelphia University are set to clash for the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship after earning victories in tonight's semi-final round in Lakewood, NJ. Both swept their opposition by 3-0 scores. The championship match is set for Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1:00 pm. The winner will receive the CACC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament.
Georgian Court and Philadelphia met twice this year, with the Lions taking both contests. GCU won by a 3-2 count at Philadelphia and swept the most recent match in Lakewood on Oct. 17.
Georgian Court, the top seed from the South Division, upended the No. 2 seed from the North, Dominican College, by a 3-0 score (25-20, 25-29, 25-16). Senior All-CACC first team pick Janelle Murdock led the Lions with a match-high 12 kills at a .308 percentage, along with six digs and four blocks. Senior Lisette Zayas added seven kills and a match-high 15 digs, while seniors Lisamary Figueroa and Stephanie Rivera and freshman Brandi Arsenault each contributed six kills. Figueroa dished out a match-high 29 assists.
Georgian Court, which improved to 26-9 with the win, hit at a .278 clip for the match and held the Chargers (22-10) to a .162 percentage. Freshman Michelle Fiorvanti, the CACC co-Rookie of the Year, and Kirsten Loney each tallied seven kills to lead DC. Freshman Whitney Ranger added 23 assists and eight digs.
Philadelphia, the No. 2 seed from the South Division, swept the top seed from the North, Caldwell College, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-22).
Cindy Adams led the Lady Rams with nine kills at a .391 percentage, 11 digs and two blocks and senior Celena Rendon, the CACC Player of the Year, added 14 digs and six kills. The Lady Rams hit .242 as a team and had only five attack errors, while Caldwell had 22 errors and a .100 hitting percentage. Philadelphia is now 32-5 on the season.
Freshman Susan McDonough, the CACC co-Rookie of the Year, led the Cougars with 12 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore Lauren Roth dished out 25 assists and registered seven digs and five kills. Caldwell fell to 21-12 with the loss.
