BLOOMFIELD AND GEORGIAN COURT ENTER VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT AS TOP SEEDS
November 5, 2007
NEW HAVEN, CT ? Bloomfield College and Georgian Court University have garnered the top seeds for this week's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Volleyball Tournament. Bloomfield is the top seed in the North Division, while Georgian Court is the No. 1 seed in the South Division. The tournament underwent two changes this season, as it has been expanded to include eight teams, and a divisional format has been used, with four teams from each division qualifying for the tournament.
Bloomfield went 17-15 overall this season and 14-3 in conference play, including a 10-0 mark against its north division opponents. The Deacons are led by three All-CACC selections, including first team honoree, sophomore outside hitter Ursula Pereira. Juniors Celeste Lindsey and Sonia Perez were second team All-CACC picks this season. The Deacons will host No. 4 Felician College in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 pm. Bloomfield swept Felician twice this season.
Felician is making its first-ever trip to the CACC Tournament after picking up two key victories in the last week of the season. The Golden Falcons, who are in their fourth season as a varsity sport, finished the season with a 6-11 conference record and a 6-22 overall mark.
Post University will serve at the No. 2 seed in the North Division and will face No. 3 Nyack College. Both teams went 8-9 in the CACC regular-season and split their two meetings, but Post won a tie-breaker to capture the No. 2 seed. Post went 8-23 overall and Nyack ended up at 9-14. Post will be led by second team All-CACC pick, junior outside hitter Kerry Smith.
Georgian Court, the defending CACC Tournament Champion, breezed through the CACC regular-season with an 18-0 record to win the South Division. The Lions swept 14 of those matches and finished the season 27-9 overall. The squad is currently ranked fifth in the Northeast Region. Junior outside hitter Ann Casado was named the CACC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and Head Coach Francisco Casado was voted co-Coach of the Year. Furthermore, junior middle blocker Crystal Murdock was a first team All-CACC selection. The Lions will face No. 4 USP in the quarterfinals Tuesday night. The Lions swept the Devils twice in the regular-season.
USP went 10-8 in conference play this season and was 16-16 overall. The Devils went 8-17 and 5-11 in the CACC last year. Junior libero Claire Tauschek was selected to the All-CACC second team, while freshman middle hitter Christine Puschak was named CACC Rookie of the Year and an honorable mention All-CACC pick. Meanwhile, freshman middle blocker Cady Rich was also an honorable mention All-CACC selection.
Philadelphia University is the No. 2 seed in the South Division and the Lady Rams will face No. 3 Holy Family in Tuesday's quarterfinal round. Philadelphia finished the CACC schedule with a 15-3 record, while Holy Family went 14-4. Philadelphia concluded the season 22-14 overall, while Holy Family is 16-20. Philadelphia defeated Holy Family on Sept. 20, 3-1, but the Tigers came back with a 3-1 victory on Oct. 2. They also met in a non-conference match on August 24th, which Philadelphia won by a score of 3-1.
Philadelphia had two players named to the All-Conference team. Senior outside hitter Emily Krauss was a first team pick for the third consecutive season, while sophomore middle hitter Nicole Berkstresser made the second team.
Four Tigers were named All-CACC, including three on the first team. The first team selections were freshman outside hitter Lauren Gosnell, junior outside hitter Jennifer O'Connor and freshman libero Maria Scherrer. Freshman setter Aimee Drabyn was a second team choice.
