NEW HAVEN, CT - Rebecca Walczak of Georgian Court University has claimed the final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Volleyball Player of the Week honor for the 2007 season in an announcement made today. Lauren Gosnell of Holy Family was tabbed the Rookie of the Week.
Walczak, a senior lebero from Toms River, NJ, helped lead Georgian Court to its second straight CACC Championship with a 3-1 victory over Holy Family. She averaged 3.4 digs per-game in the tournament in three matches. She recorded 15 digs in the championship match.
Gosnell, a freshman from Tipton, IN, averaged 4.33 kills, 1.83 digs and 0.75 service aces per-game in helping lead the Tigers to the CACC Tournament Championship match. She posted 19 kills, four aces and 10 digs in championship match against Georgian Court.
CACC Notes
Felician - Felician's fourth varsity season was its most successful, with a school-record six wins and its first conference playoff berth under first-year head coach Alan Clements. As a freshman, L Erica Moore has become the program's all-time digs leader with 545. Senior DS Nicole Niedzwicki also passed the 500 mark, finishing with 508. Niedzwicki has played in all 99 matches in program history.
Holy Family - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team's season came to an end in the finals of the CACC Tournament on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Georgian Court. The Tigers defeated Philadelphia University in the opening round, 3-2. Lauren Gosnell (21 kills, 11 digs), Jennifer O'Connor (21 kills, 21 digs) and Aimee Drabyn (51 assists, 17 digs) all had double-doubles in the victory. On Friday, Holy Family took down Bloomfield, 3-0. O'Connor and Gosnell had double-digits kills with 15 and 12, respectively. Drabyn had 38 assists. Maria Scherrer had 25 digs while Kelly Cummins recorded 12. In the finals, Gosnell, O'Connor and Drabyn each had double-doubles. Gosnell had 19 kills and 10 digs. O'Connor recorded 15 kills and 22 digs. Drabyn had 51 assists and 11 digs. O'Connor and Scherrer were both on the All-Tournament Team. Drabyn finished the season with an all-time school record of 1,318 assists. Gosnell led the team with 537 kills, while O'Connor followed with 507. The 537 kills is a single-season record. Scherrer had 900 digs, also a school record. The Tigers finished the season with an 18-21 overall record and a 14-4 conference mark. Head coach Sue Kilian was named CACC Co-Coach of the Year. Gosnell, O'Connor and Scherrer were all CACC First Team selections. Drabyn was a second-teamer.
USP - USP's 16 overall wins is the third highest total in school history and doubles last season's total of eight. Junior Claire Tauschek set a school record with 654 digs in a season. Cady Rich's 140 blocks are the most ever by a freshman at USP and the second highest single season total in the history of the program. In last week's NCAA statistics report, Claire Tauschek ranked 38th nationally in digs/game (5.63); Christine Puschak ranked 53rd nationally in aces per game (0.60) and Cady Rich ranked 40th nationally in blocks/game (1.24). The Devils as a team rank 87th in the nation in digs/game (17.91), 45th nationally in aces/game (2.38) and 87th nationally in blocks per game (2.16).
