PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY IS PRE-SEASON CACC VOLLEYBALL FAVORITE

August 22, 2006

NEW HAVEN ? After compiling a 21-1 conference record in its first season as a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) last year, the Philadelphia University volleyball team is the pre-season favorite in 2006 according to a poll conducted by the league's 12 head coaches. The Rams collected nine of the 12 first-place votes and 138 total points.

In addition to its 21-1 CACC mark last year, Philadelphia went 30-5 overall and won the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament Championship with victories over Bridgeport and C.W. Post. The Rams return five starters, including two All-CACC performers in junior outside hitter Emily Krauss and senior setter Kristin Goede. The Rams will be eligible to play in the CACC Tournament for the first time this season. The team was not able to participate last year due to a conference rule prohibiting first-year members from taking part in conference tournaments.

Goldey-Beacom is second in the poll and is the reigning CACC Tournament Champion. The Lightning went 20-2 in conference play and 25-7 overall and swept their way through the CACC Tournament to earn a spot in the NCAA Northeast Regional. GBC picked up one first-place vote and 127 points in the poll.

Georgian Court received one first-place nod and was third in the poll with 110 points. The Lions went 14-16 overall last year and 11-11 in the CACC.

USP and Wilmington are fourth and fifth in the poll with 105 and 100 points, respectively. The Devils were voted first by one coach after reaching the CACC Tournament Championship last season. The Devils return the 2005 CACC Rookie of the Year, Claire Tauschek, and are led by 2005 CACC Coach of the Year, Michael Sinesi. Wilmington is coming off a 15-21 season and a 13-9 showing in the CACC.
