GEORGIAN COURT'S ALICIA SCOTT NAMED CACC NOMINEE FOR NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD

July 24, 2006

NEW HAVEN - Georgian Court volleyball standout Alicia Scott has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, announced Commissioner Dan Mara. The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors senior student-athletes for their cumulative collegiate achievements in service, leadership, athletics and academics. Scott graduated from Georgian Court in May.

"We are very proud of Alicia and what she has accomplished in her four years at Georgian Court," said GCU Director of Athletics, Laura Liesman. "Alicia has shown one of the best work ethics of any student-athlete I have had the pleasure of knowing. Her leadership skills, along with her presence on the court, serve as a wonderful example for our other student-athletes."

As a volleyball player, Scott served as team captain for the Lions for three seasons and averaged 1.18 blocks per-game as a senior after accumulating 126 total blocks (53 solo, 73 assists). Scott, who hails from Point Pleasant Boro, NJ, ranked third in the CACC in blocks per-game and added 2.39 kills per-game.

Scott's resume is even more impressive off the court. She was President of the GCU Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), was a member of the Health and Fitness Club, belonged to three Honor Societies (Phi Alpha Theta, Phi Eta Sigma and Sigma Tau Delta) and was the recipient of the Georgian Court Athletic Presidential Award in 2006. In addition, she was a member of the Women in Leadership Development (WILD) since 2004, attended the NCAA Leadership Conference in May and June of 2006 and was named the New Jersey Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Woman of the Year in 2005-06. Furthermore, she was named to the CACC All-Academic team in both of its years of existence and was a party leader at the U.S. Model House of Representatives in April of 2006.

Despite her busy schedule juggling academics and athletics, Scott was able to find enough time for other endeavors. She was a leader in GCU's effort to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation each of the last three years, was a part of the Read Across America program and spent time mentoring elementary school students, and she was the head coach of the Jersey Shore Volleyball Club in 2005 and 2006.

The nominees from each conference across the nation are forwarded to the Woman of the Year selection committee, who will pick the top 10 winners in each division. From among those 30 honorees, the committee will determine the top three in each division. Finally, the members of the committee will vote from the top nine to determine the 2006 NCAA Woman of the Year.

The top 10 honorees from Divisions I, II and III will be honored at a dinner in Indianapolis on October 28, 2006.
