PLEVAKO CLAIMS WOMEN'S TENNIS WEEKLY AWARD

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yuliya Plevako of Concordia College has claimed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis PLayer of the Week accolades for Monday, Sept. 19. Anastasia Melnikova of Goldey-Beacom College was named Rookie of the Week.

Plevako, a 5-9 junior from Astana, Kazakhstan, advanced to the championship match of the ITA Regionals “A” draw, where she lost to NYIT’s Sara Burinato. She entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and defeated #2 Nastia Shcherbakova of Chestnut Hill in the semi-finals, 6-2, 6-3. 

Melnikova, a 5-10 freshman from Vladivostok, Russia, won the ITA Regional “B” singles draw with a 8-0 victory over Jen Denyes of Stonehill College over the weekend.

Honorable Mention

Nastia Shcherbakova, Chestnut Hill (Jr., 5-9, Minsk, Belarus) - Reached the semi-finals of the “A” singles draw at ITA Regionals and went 2-0 in singles and doubles in match play earlier in the week.

Morgan Oechsle, Chestnut Hill (Fr., 5-7, Coopersburg, PA) - Reached the semi-finals of the “B” draws in both singles and doubles at the ITA Regionals.

CACC Team Notes

Caldwell - The Cougars split a pair of dual matches last week, falling to Philadelphia, 5-4 on Tuesday before defeating St. Thomas Aquinas 7-2 for their first win of the season. Senior Olga Ndhlovu won all four of her matches last week, while senior Sara Wilking won both of her matches at No. 3 singles. Ndhlovu and freshman Briana Gaspich are 3-0 at No. 3 doubles this year.
 
Concordia - Concordia will host both Chestnut Hill and Philadelphia this weekend, both of which are conference meetings. The Clippers will first face the Griffins on Saturday and the Rams will play Concordia on Sunday.

Georgian Court - Freshman Maria Leal (#1 singles) advanced to the third round in the “A” singles bracket at the Wilson/ITA Regional Championships in Philadelphia this past weekend. Freshman Nicole Way leads the Lions with a 3-1 singles record in match play thus far this season. The Lions will host Rutgers-Camden Thursday afternoon in non-conference action before traveling to University of the Sciences for a CACC match on Saturday.

Goldey-Beacom - Anastasia Melnikova is Goldey-Beacom’s first-ever ITA Regional champion.  GBC has had a freshman reach the finals of the Women’s B Singles Draw the last two consecutive years.
 
Philadelphia - The Rams will host Holy Family this week (9/21) to start teh first of three matches. Later in the week, PhilaU will travel to both Alvernia (9/24) and defending CACC champion, Concordia (9/25).
