MENDES SELECTED PLAYER OF WEEK FOR WOMEN'S TENNIS
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Ana Mendes of Concordia College has been selected the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Monday, Oct. 24. Stephanie Puentes of Goldey-Beacom College was the recipient of Rookie of the Week accolades.
Mendes, a 5-9 junior from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, was named MVP
of the 2011 CACC
Tournament by helping to lead the Clippers to their third straight
championship. She went 3-0 on the week, winning both of her matches
at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles in the championship match
against Goldey-Beacom.
Puentes, a freshman from Bogota, Columbia, went 3-1 last week at the CACC Tournament at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. She won both of her appearances in a semi-final victory over Chestnut Hill and was victorious in her singles match against Yuliya Plevako in Sunday's championship match.
CACC Team Notes
Chestnut Hill - Finished the 2011 fall season with program’s
best record since the College elevated to a NCAA DII institution in
2007, recording a 13-3 overall mark and going 7-1 in the CACC. Four
Griffins were recognized on the All-CACC rosters and Head Coach
Albert Stroble earned his third CACC Coach of the Year Award,
second consecutively.
Goldey-Beacom - The Lightning finished the season with a record of
7-3. They advanced to their third consecutive CACC Tournament
Finals, where, for the third season, they fell to Concordia. Five
Lightning players earned All-CACC Honors: freshman Stephanie
Puentes was the Player/Rookie of the Year, juniors Melanie Bonomo
and Marina Sales were Second Team, and junior Blanca Sancho and
freshman Filipa Correia were both tabbed Honorable Mention.
