PLEVAKO TABBED PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR WOMEN'S TENNIS
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yuliya Plevako of Concordia College has been tabbed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 16. Briana Gaspich of Caldwell College was the choice for Rookie of the
Week.
Plevako, a 5-9 junior from Astana, Kazakhstan, went 2-0 at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles last week. She helped lead Concordia in a victory over Chestnut Hill, giving the Clippers the top spot in the CACC standings.
Gaspich, a 5-10 freshman from Brick, N.J., won all three of her matches at both No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles to lead the Cougars to victories over Georgian Court, USciences and Molloy.
Honorable Mention
Jin Querubin, Holy Family (Jr., 5-5, Mississauga, Ontario) - Went 2-0 at both No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles last week.
Stephanie Puentes, Goldey-Beacom (Fr., 5-6, Bogota, Columbia) - Went 2-0 in singles and doubles last week.
Kelly Dennis, Chestnut Hill (So., 5-6, Cincinnati, OH) - Was 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 1-1 at No. 2 doubles last week.
Isabella Espinosa, Philadelphia (So., 5-3, Quito, Ecuador) - Earned two wins against Holy Family at No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles.
CACC Team Notes
Caldwell - Cougars won all three of their duals last week to improve to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the CACC. The team hasn't won six duals in a season since 2006, when they finished 6-8. The No. 3 doubles tandem of senior Olga Ndhlovu and freshman Briana Gaspich won all three matches last week to improve to 9-1 on the year. Gaspich (8-2) and senior Sara Wilkins (8-3) are tied for the team lead in singles victories. Caldwell wraps up the regular season with a CACC dual against Concordia on Monday.
Concordia - Concordia (7-0, 7-0 CACC) will travel to Caldwell on Monday for their final conference match of the season. This weekend, Concordia will host the CACC Championship where the Clippers will look to repeat as tournament champion for the third straight season.
Holy Family - Holy Family went 2-0 this past weekend to clinch the fourth seed in the upcoming CACC Championships. The Tigers defeated Georgian Court (9-0) and Philadelphia (5-4). Juniors Juliana Victoria and Jin Querubin finished conference play with a perfect 7-0 record at number one doubles. The duo is a combined 13-1 overall at first doubles this season.
