CONCORDIA AND GOLDEY-BEACOM SET TO MEET FOR CACC WOMEN'S TENNIS TITLE
BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (October 22, 2011) – Top seed Concordia College and No. 3 Goldey-Beacom College will battle for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Tennis Championship for the third consecutive season Sunday at noon in Bronxville, NY. Both notched semi-final victories Saturday afternoon to earn a spot in the finale. The Clippers upended the Lightning in the championship match in 2009 and 2010.
Concordia (9-0) swept No. 4 Holy Family University, 5-0, to
start the action Saturday. The
Clippers would jump out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles play.
Clara Catanzano and Yuliya Plevako won a highly competitive #1
doubles match, 9-8 over the duo of Jin Querubin and Juliana
Victoria. The #2 doubles team of Ana S.O. Mendes and juliana Frey
and the #3 doubles team of Camilla Gomes Xavier and Maria Ortiz
both won 8-1 in their respective matches.
In singles play, Catanzano would win her #3 match over Maja Pantelic to give Concordia a 4-0 edge. Needing only one more win to secure the victory, Plevako won 6-7 (1-7), 6-1, 6-1 over Querubin to advance the Clippers to Sunday’s championship.
Goldey-Beacom (7-2) avenged a 5-4 loss to Chestnut Hill last week with a 5-2 triumph over the Griffins on Saturday. GBC took two of the three doubles points, including wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The No. 1 team of Stephanie Puentes and Anastasia Melnikova claimed an 8-2 victory, while the No. 3 duo of Vanessa Leon and Blanca Sancho earned an 8-4 win. Chestnut Hill’s point came at No. 2 from Maria Parapouras and Morgan Oechsle.
In singles, Puentes, Sancho and Melanie Bonomo posted wins for GBC to give the Lightning the 5-2 victory. Puentes won at the No. 1 spot, Sancho at No. 2 and Bonomo at No. 5. Chestnut Hill’s Parapouras won her No. 3. singles match.
