CONCORDIA AND GOLDEY-BEACOM SET TO SQUARE OFF FOR CACC WOMEN'S TENNIS TITLE

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Top seeded Concordia College and No. 2 Goldey-Beacom College will meet for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Tennis Championship for the second straight season on Saturday at Chestnut Hill College. The Clippers upended No. 4 Chestnut Hill College, 5-0, in today’s semi-final round, while the Lightning defeated No. 3 Holy Family University, 5-1.  Concordia claimed last season’s championship with a 5-3 triumph over GBC.

Concordia, which is now 10-0 this season, opened the day with three doubles victories, including a tough 8-6 win at the No.1  spot by senior Ola Roberts and sophomore Yuliya Plevako. The duo was able to get past the Chestnut Hill team of Nastia Shcherbakova and Kelly Dennis. No. 2 doubles was another competitive match, with the Clipper tandem of Maria Ortiz and Juliana Frey garnering an 8-5 win over Danielle Knott and Maria Parapouras. Concordia’s No. 3 doubles squad got an 8-0 win over Regina Doherty and Kristen Wasson.

In singles play, Ortiz and Mendes clinched the match with wins at the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively. Chestnut Hill is now 8-6 this season.

Sophomore Melanie Bonomo earned the deciding fifth point for GBC (11-1) at No. 4 singles to give the Lightning the victory over Holy Family.

The Lightning began singles play with a 2-1 advantage courtesy of two doubles wins by the No. 2 and 3 teams. Sophomore Blanca Sancho and freshman Gabriela Chaves earned an 8-5 win over Maja Pantelic and Chelsea Brown at No. 2, and sophomore Vanessa Leon and freshman Laura Cure defeated Linda Piecyk and Katie Cook, 8-2, at No. 3.

Chaves downed Cook 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and Cure bested Brown 6-1, 6-1, which left just one more point to be scored. Bonomo cashed in with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Piecyk.

This win marks the second straight year the Lightning have hosted and defeated the Tigers in the semi-finals. The Lightning improved to 2-2 all-time in post-season play. Holy Family falls to 9-3 with the loss.
