PHILADELPHIA WINS CACC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

October 16, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, PA- The Philadelphia University women's tennis team won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship in a 5-3 nail biter over Holy Family University on Thursday afternoon at Chestnut Hill College. The Lady Rams will go on to compete in NCAA Regionals this spring. It is the first CACC women's tennis championship for the Lady Rams.

With Philadelphia leading the match, 4-3, two singles matches were still on the court, and each was a heated battle. Finally, Phila U. sophomore No. 2 singles player Daniela Rodriguez clinched the victory for her Lady Rams with a tough 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Tiger senior Quena Borres.

The victory was the first CACC championship for head coach Marty Gilbert and the Lady Rams, as Holy Family had beaten the Lady Rams the past two years in the title match. Last year the Tigers swept Philadelphia 5-0 for the championship.

The Lady Rams received wins from sophomore No. 1 Adriana Rodriguez in three sets, and she teamed with D. Rodriguez to win their No. 1 doubles contest. Freshmen Christina Brzozowski and Sarah Harris both won their singles matches as well.

Philadelphia improves to 14-2 overall after winning its 14th consecutive match, while Holy Family falls to 10-4.
