HOLY FAMILY AND PHILADELPHIA TO SQUARE OFF FOR CACC TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
October 12, 2007
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Top-seeded Holy Family University and No. 2 Philadelphia University have advanced to the championship match of the 2007 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Tournament with victories in today's semifinal round. The Tigers upended No. 4 Georgian Court University, 6-0, while the Lady Rams won by a 5-0 score over No. 3 USP. The tournament is being hosted by Philadelphia University on its Main Campus Courts.
Holy Family and Philadelphia will square off for the championship, and with it an automatic bid to the 2007-08 NCAA Division II Championships, at noon on Saturday. Holy Family will be looking for its second straight CACC Championship.
Holy Family, which is now 11-1 this season, had little trouble with Georgian Court, sweeping doubles and losing just one game in the process. The Tiger No. 1 team of sophomores Quena Borres and Shakir Willet won, 8-1, the No. 2 team of sophomore Lianna Lui and senior Lauren Neill won, 8-0 and freshman Ashley Berge and sophomore Melanie Pulsinelli were also victorious by an 8-0 count.
In singles play, Willett defeated Melissa Gaffney at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, while Pulsinelli won at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0 over Katarina Dockum. A point for Berge's victory at No. 6 was also recorded, as her match concluded at the same time as Pulsinelli's. Berge got past Sandrine Holloway, 6-1, 6-1. Due to conference rules, the first team to record five points is awarded the victory, thus not all matches were completed.
Philadelphia started the day with a 5-0 victory over No. 3 USP to improve to 13-3 this season. The Lady Rams swept the doubles competition, with the No.1 doubles team of senior Maddie Smith and freshman Adriana Rodriguez leading the way with an 8-6 victory. Freshman Daniela Rodriguez and sophomore Christina Kettle earned an 8-3 win at second doubles, while junior Amanda Brennan and senior Katie Stracquatanio won by an 8-4 count at No. 3 doubles.
Up 3-0, the Lady Rams needed just two points in singles to advance to the championship and Daniela and Adriana Rodriguez both came through with wins. Daniela won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2 over Sarah Leonard, while Adriana won in the third slot over Zahra Hasan, 6-0, 6-1.
