RAIN SHORTENS FIRST DAY OF CACC INDIVIDUAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT

October 19, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Rain shortened the first day of the 2007 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Individual Tournament today at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School in Philadelphia. The semifinals are set for the singles bracket, while one of the semifinal match-ups was settled in doubles. The tournament will conclude tomorrow, with the action starting at 9:00 am.

In singles, the top four seeds went to senior Maddie Smith of Philadelphia University, freshman Luisiana Souto of Goldey-Beacom College, senior Amanda Bedway of USP and junior Quena Borres of Holy Family University. Smith won two matches today to reach the semifinal round, where she will face her teammate, freshman Daniela Rodriguez, tomorrow. Rodriguez upset Borres in the quarterfinals, 5-7, 6-3 (10-7).

Souto and Bedway also won both of their matches today and will play for a spot in the finals tomorrow morning.

Today's rain affected the doubles draw, as only one half of the bracket made it through the quarterfinal round. Holy Family's team of senior Lauren Neill and Borres, the second seed, defeated Caldwell to reach the semifinals. They will play the Georgian Court duo of seniors Autumn Florez and Corrine Stinemire tomorrow for the right to play for the doubles championship.

Two quarterfinal matches were underway before the rain hit and will have to be completed Saturday morning. The Philadelphia team of Smith and freshman Adriana Rodriguez, the top seed, will finish a match with the Goldey-Beacom team of Souto and Stephanie Bain. The other match is between Holy Family's second team of juniors Melanie Pulsinelli and Lianna Lui against Philadelphia's second team of Daniela Rodriguez and senior Katie Stracquatanio. The winners of those two matches will meet in the semifinals tomorrow.
