GEORGIAN COURT AND HOLY FAMILY ADVANCE TO CACC WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
NEW CASTLE, DE (November 5, 2009) - Second seeded Georgian Court University and No. 4 Holy Family University will meet for the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Soccer Championship after winning their semi-final matches today in New Castle, DE. GCU defeated No. 6 Dominican College, 4-0, while Holy Family upset top seeded Philadelphia University, 1-0.
Holy Family avenged a double-overtime loss to Philadelphia (13-5-3) last week with its 1-0 triumph today. Holy Family (12-8-1) took an early lead in the first half as sophomore Dawn Curry knocked the game-winner in at 27:44 on a free kick. Tiger goalie Gina Mansi made five stops for the Tigers, while Philadelphia freshman goalie Kelli Kowalewski posted four saves.
Georgian Court (15-7) scored four second half goals in its victory over Dominican (9-6-4). The first came in the 55th minute when freshman midfielder Taylor Reincke scored off an assist from classmate Farell Pomponio. GCU's next two goals came just one minute and 21 seconds apart, and were scored by junior Skyler Eiceman and sophomore Shealyn Sullivan in the 73rd and 75th minutes, respectively. Freshman Becky Witmer assisted on both goals, the second coming off a corner kick. The final goal was netted by sophomore Kelly Lyons, who knocked in a rebound after a teammate hit a shot off the cross bar in the 87th minute.
The Lions and the Tigers will meet at 1:30 pm on Saturday to decide the CACC Championship. The winner will receive the CACC's automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. GCU won the regular-season meeting in Lakewood, 2-0, on Oct. 7.
