HOLY FAMILY WINS CACC WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

November 3, 2007

RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Holy Family University used a 36th-minute goal by senior midfielder Kaitlin Gavaghan (Philadelphia, PA) to win the championship game of the 2007 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Soccer Tournament, 1-0, over Philadelphia University on Saturday evening. The match was hosted by Felician College at Tryon Field.

Top-seeded Holy Family (14-7) won its sixth CACC title in the last nine years, and earned the league's first automatic qualifier in women's soccer to the NCAA Division II New England Regional tournament. The Tigers also avenged a shootout loss to Philadelphia in last year's championship game.

On the game-winning goal, Gavaghan took possession of a deflected ball, took a few dribbles, and fired a 25-yard bounding shot from the right wing that got past the goalkeeper and into the lower left corner of the net. HFU kept the Rams (14-6) off the scoreboard despite a 20-11 shot disadvantage, including 15-4 in the second half.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Kelly McGrogan (Philadelphia, PA) made seven saves in earning her third shutout of the week. Philadelphia's Melissa McMullen (Eastampton, NJ) hit the crossbar with a 62nd-minute shot.

The field for the NCAA Tournament will be released Monday evening.
