Pair of CACC Lacrosse Players Earn ECAC Postseason Honors
COMPLETE ECAC WOMEN'S LACROSSE ALL-STAR TEAM RELEASE
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 31, 2012) – Dominican College freshman Allison Smithwick (Commack, N.Y.) has been honored as the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year. In addition, Post University senior Mallorie Michalak (Meriden, Conn.) was named to the 12-member 2012 ECAC Division II Women's Lacrosse All-Star Team, both of which were announced Wednesday by ECAC Officials.
Smithwick, who was also recognized as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) 2012 Lacrosse Rookie of the Year, enjoyed a breakthrough freshman campaign from her attack position as she posted 54 points, which ranked ninth among the CACC leaders. She also finished the regular season with 37 goals (12th in CACC) and 17 assists (6th in CACC).
Smithwick was honored as the CACC Rookie of the Week and Player of the Week once this season and also earned ECAC Player of the Week honors on one occasion.
Michalak's selection to the ECAC All-Star squad marks the first time in the history of the Post lacrosse program that one of its student-athletes was named an ECAC All-Star.
The program's all-time leader in points (72), goals (59), assists (13), ground balls (94) and caused turnovers (53), Michalak led the CACC in ground balls and caused turnovers during the 2012 season. Furthermore, she ranked sixth in the nation in caused turnovers (2.2 per game) and 11th in ground balls per game (3.53 per game).
Offensively, Michalak ranked second on the team in goals (31) and points (42). She led the Eagles with 11 assists this season. Michalak tied the program's single-game record for goals with seven against St. Joseph on March 9.
Following her successful three seasons as a women's lacrosse student-athlete at Post, Michalak was named the program's assistant coach on May 24.
The ECAC Division II Player of the Year was Brittany Brigandi of LeMoyne, while the Defensive Player of the Year was Long Island University – C.W. Post's Chelsea Donaldson.
