HOLY FAMILY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TIES NCAA DIVISION II RECORD FOR CONSECUTIVE CONFERENCE WINS
BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Holy Family University women's basketball
team tied the NCAA Division II record for most regular-season
conference victories after defeating Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference (CACC) opponent Concordia (N.Y.), 71-37, at the Meyer
Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
Holy Family earned its 92nd straight regular-season win against the
CACC. The winning streak started on February 25, 2005 with a 64-43
win at Caldwell College. The Tigers have tied The College of Saint
Rose, who won 92 straight games against New York Collegiate
Athletic Conference foes from February 8, 1996 until February 20,
1999.
The Tigers will go for their 93rd straight, and record-breaking,
CACC victory on Thursday, January 28 at Goldey-Beacom College at 6
p.m.
Holy Family, ranked 22nd in the latest USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll,
improves to 15-1 overall and 8-0 in the CACC after winning its 15th
straight contest.
The Tigers had balanced scoring throughout the contest with four
players reaching double-digits. Forward Catherine
Carr (jr. Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) paced the attack with
11 points. Forwards Meghan Gibson (jr.
Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Erin Mann
(fr. West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria) and guard Molly
Hanlon (fr. Narbeth, Pa./Lower Merion) all had 10
points.
Holy Family led the game 12-10 before breaking things wide open by
out-scoring Concordia 28-4 over the final 10:43 of the first half
to lead 40-14 at intermission.
During the run, eight different Tigers got in on the scoring act.
Carr led the way with six points. The Tigers also played lockdown
defense to close out the half, holding the Clippers to 2-of-16
shooting and forcing eight turnovers.
Holy Family used a 15-1 run, capped by a pair of free throws by
forward Lindsey Tennett (jr. Perkasie,
Pa./Pennridge), to extend its lead to 55-21 with 11:42 to play. The
advantage hit a game-high 36 points (67-31) after a jumper by
forward Kelly Brady (fr. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean
City) at the 6:02 mark.
Concordia (1-16, 1-8 CACC) received a game-high 13 points from
guard Shelley Monahan.
Holy Family shot 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field, while
Concordia hit on 30.8 percent (16-of-52) of its shots. The Tigers
made a season-high 30 free throws, on 32 attempts (93.8 percent).
Holy Family out-rebounded Concordia, 44-31 and forced a
season-high 27 turnovers.
