HOLY FAMILY AND DOMINICAN ADVANCE TO CACC WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT FINAL

March 6, 2008

NEW HAVEN, CT ? Holy Family University and Dominican College are set to meet for the 2007-08 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Tournament Championship on Saturday, March 8 at 2:00 pm. Both squads had little trouble in their semifinal victories on Wednesday evening. Holy Family, the fourth-ranked team in the country and the top seed in the CACC's South Division, defeated Bloomfield College, 70-47. Dominican, the North Division #1 seed, upended South No. 2 Wilmington University, 74-46.

Holy Family will be attempting to win its second straight CACC Tournament Championship after defeating Philadelphia University 68-44 last season.

Freshman forward Catherine Carr led Holy Family to its 29th win of the season (29-0) against Bloomfield with 20 points behind 8-for-14 shooting and 3-for-6 accuracy from 3-point range. She also hauled in six rebounds. Freshman forward Meghan Gibson added nine points of the bench, while freshman forward Lindsey Tennett and junior guard Lauren Boyer scored seven points apiece. Boyer had eight rebounds, while Tennett had seven.

Bloomfield (15-14) was led by senior forward Shantae Barnes' 16 points and eight rebounds, while classmate Ciera Darby contributed six points.

The Tigers jumped out to a 21-3 lead right out of the gate as six different Holy Family players contributed for the early lead. A Carr 3-pointer gave the Tigers a 21-point lead (29-8) with 5:07 left in the half. Bloomfield outscored Holy Family, 9-3, over the final 5:07 to trail at the half 32-17. The Tigers came out hot to start the second half by going on a 12-2 spurt to take a 25-point advantage (44-19) with 14:24 to play. A 6-0 mini-run, capped by two Tennett free throws, gave Holy Family its largest lead of the night at 58-23.

Dominican (22-7) cruised to its victory by also taking control from the opening tip, starting the game with a 21-4 spurt. The Chargers took advantage of 22 Wildcat first half turnovers, coming up with 15 steals, to take a 37-21 lead at the break.

The Lady Chargers continued to stay hot in the second half after going on a 17-3 run to take a 51-24 lead with 12:10 remaining. With under ten minutes to go, DC led by 35 points (65-30) en route to the 74-46 victory. Wilmington (20-9) shot just 25.0-percent (6-for-24) in the second half, while the Lady Chargers shot 55.2-percent (16-for-29).

Sophomore Adele Laskowski led the Lady Chargers with 15 points and four steals, while junior Althea Chambers finished with 13 points, four boards and three steals. Junior Shalissa Burgess chipped in 12 points and senior point guard Dana Rotio netted 11 points, five assists and four steals in the win. Sophomore Amelia Simmons led the Wildcats with 13 points, while senior Nordia Henry had a game-leading 13 rebounds to go with eight points in the loss.

Holy Family and Dominican met once in the regular-season in Orangeburg, NY, with the Tigers taking a 55-50 triumph on February 16. Both teams struggled from the field, as Holy Family shot just 32.1-percent (18-of-56) and Dominican only 26.2-percent (16-for-61). Both teams also had trouble with their long-range accuracy, as Holy Family shot just 2-for-17 (11.8-percent) and Dominican went 3-for-20 (15.0-percent).

Dominican took a 21-18 lead at the half, but Holy Family took a lead just over five minutes into the second half and never trailed again. Dominican did manage to tie the game at 35 with 9:04 left, but Holy Family responded with a 6-0 run over the next 3:14 to regain its edge.

Carr and sophomore guard Alana Arthurs paced Holy Family with 13 points apiece and Boyer grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Laskowski and Burgess each notched 10 points for Dominican, while Rotio and freshman Rachelle Sainten both recorded nine points.
