TOP SEEDS ALL PREVAIL IN QUARTERFINALS OF CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

March 1, 2008

NEW HAVEN, CT-Holy Family University, Dominican College, Wilmington University and Bloomfield College earned victories in Saturday's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinal round. Holy Family will host Bloomfield and Dominican will welcome Wilmington in the semifinals on Wednesday, March 5. Both games will begin at 7:00 pm. The winners will meet for the CACC Championship on Saturday, March 8.

In the South Division, top seeded Holy Family defeated No. 4 University of the Sciences, 60-48, while No. 2 Wilmington defeated third-seeded Philadelphia University, 77-69.In the North Division, No. 1 Dominican defeated North No. 4 Nyack, 78-64 and No. 2 Bloomfield was victorious over Caldwell College, 72-59.

Freshman forward Catherine Carr led Holy Family past USP (13-15) with 20 points as the Tigers, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, improve 28-0 this season. Carr, the CACC Rookie of the Year, was the only Tiger in double-figures. She added five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal. CACC Player of the Year Kelly Killion and sophomore Christine McCollum recorded seven points each. Forward Allison Weiss led the Devils with 10 points and forward Erin Chesnavich hauled down a team-best nine rebounds.

After leading at the break by a five-point margin (27-22), Holy Family used an 11-2 run, ending with a jumper by Carr, to regain a double-digit lead (38-26) with 15:20 left in the game. The lead was extended to 19 (49-30) after a 9-0 spurt, capped by another Carr jumper. The Devils came back with six unanswered points to close within 13 (49-36) with 7:10 to play. However, Holy Family fought back to outscore USP, 9-2, to take its largest lead of the game (58-38) with 1:58 left.

Sophomore guard Rachelle Sainten came off the bench to pour in 23 points to lead Dominican past Nyack. After Nyack took a 12-6 lead just over five minutes into the game, the Chargers picked up the pace and exploded for a 17-1 run to take a 23-13 lead, highlighted by Sainten's back to back treys. In the second half, Dominican (21-7) held a 56-40 lead with just over ten minutes to go when the Warriors put together an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to 59-51 with 7:07 on the clock The Lady Chargers built the lead back up to 70-53 on a three point play by junior Althea Chambers and cruised to the 78-64 victory.

Senior guard Dana Rotio finished with 15 points (3-5 from three point land), six rebounds, a game leading seven assists and three steals for the Chargers, while forward Adele Laskowski scored 13 points. Nyack (10-17) was led by senior guard Tamyra Lathon with 21 points (11-11 from the foul line), three assists and three steals. Guard Christy Porter netted 12 points.

Wilmington was able to upend Philadelphia after jumping out to a commanding 33-16 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. Senior center Nordia Henry led the way for the Wildcats with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Amelia Simmons added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Philadelphia (19-9) made things interesting in the second half, staying within an arm's length of Wilmington most of the way. The Lady Rams cut the Wildcat margin to one after four straight points from freshman guard Steph Agger made the score 65-64 with just 2:35 left in the game. That would be as close as the Lady Rams would get, as the Wildcats' clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch sealed their third win over Philadelphia this season. Wilmington (20-8) scored their final 14 points from the charity stripe, where they shot 16-19 (84.2%) overall and 14-16 in the final four minutes of the contest.

Philadelphia was led by sophomore Jessica Romano (21 points and nine rebounds) and senior Ashley Webster (15 points and 15 rebounds).

Bloomfield (15-13) avenged two losses to Caldwell in the regular season with a victory on Saturday afternoon. Bloomfield was led by a balanced scoring attack, as six players scored between eight and 13 points. Senior Ciera Darby led the way with 13 points, while Amber DeHass added 12. Senior Shantae Barnes added eight points and 18 rebounds. Caldwell (17-11) was led by junior Mackenzie Lynch's 16 points and 13 rebounds, while senior guard Dana Leary recorded 15 points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Deacons were able to quickly build an eight-point lead (11-3) after a runner in the lane by Darby. Bloomfield's lead would grow to as many as 15 points (32-17) in the first half with the Lady Deacons seizing control of the game and a 37-23 lead at the break. Bloomfield led by as many as 21 (53-32) in the second half and cruised to the win.
