TOP THREE SEEDS AND GOLDEY-BEACOM COLLEGE WIN IN CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

February 28, 2007

NEW HAVEN, CT ? Holy Family, Philadelphia, USP and Goldey-Beacom have moved on to the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Tournament with victories in Wednesday night's quarterfinal round. No. 2 Philadelphia and No. 3 USP will play in Friday's first semifinal contest at noon, while top-seeded Holy Family will face fifth-seeded Goldey-Beacom at 2:00 pm. Both the semifinals and finals of the tournament will be played at Coach Baxter Court on the campus of Dominican College in Orangeburg, NY.

Holy Family upended Post, 73-47, Philadelphia got past Wilmington, 67-63, USP defeated Bloomfield 73-63 and Goldey-Beacom earned an impressive road win at Dominican, 71-49.

Holy Family, the 10th-ranked team in the nation, had little problem in disposing of #8 Post. The Eagles, who were swept by the Tigers during the season, were within four points with 9:48 to go at 19-15. That would be the closest they would get the rest of the game. Post ran the shot clock down on the majority of its possessions in the first half, shooting 50 percent from the field. However, Holy Family (26-2) held a 38-29 lead at intermission. The Tigers took control of the game with 15:01 left with a 20-2 run to extend to a 69-39 edge. Senior forward Chrissy Kosiek had a game-high 16 points for Holy Family, while CACC Player of the Year Kelly Killion had 15 points, including four three-pointers.

Seniors Tadj Williams (15 points, five rebounds) and Marjorie Prado (14 points, three assists) led Post (9-19) on the evening.

Philadelphia's (19-8) All-Conference duo of Meg Abele and Alisha Ferguson led the Rams over Wilmington. Abele, the conference's leading scorer, poured in 24 points while Ferguson, the CACC leading rebounder, registered 16 points and 11 boards. After a low scoring first half in which Philadelphia led, 23-19, the teams combined for 88 points in the second half (44 each).

Junior point guard Sherrelle Holmes led Wilmington (13-15) with 20 points, six assists and five rebounds, while CACC Rookie of the Year Amelia Simmons tallied 17 points and seven rebounds.

USP, the 2005-06 CACC Tournament Champion, put five players in double-figures to earn the win over Bloomfield. Senior All-CACC guard Shelby Rance and senior guard Rashanna Edwards led the Devils with 17 points apiece. Sophomore Allison Weiss added 11 points (all in the second half) and pulled down nine rebounds. Senior Lori Sedina also scored 11 points (7-8 FT) and freshman Erin Chesnavich chipped in 10. Rance also had seven rebounds, six steals and three assists. Edwards recorded a game-high five assists, pulled down six rebounds and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

Bloomfield placed four players in double figures led by Shantae Barnes. Barnes scored 19 points and pulled down 23 rebounds. DeAnjole Felton added 12 points while Marissa Franklin had 11 points and six rebounds. Ciera Darby chipped in 10 points before fouling out with three minutes to go in the game.

Senior first team All-Conference selection Cherrise Graham led the Lightning over Dominican with 36 points, eight rebounds and two steals. She shot 13-for-28 from the field and 8-for-11 from the charity stripe. She was aided by Toni Jones and Kim Rowley, who both notched double-doubles. Jones had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Rowley recorded 13 points and 10 boards.

Goldey-Beacom (18-10) broke things open with 15-1 run to open the second half, turning a six-point lead at the break (32-26) into a 20-point bulge (47-27) with 13:54 remaining. Dominican didn't get closer than 13 the rest of the way and shot just 27.7-percent (18-65) from the field in the game.

Dana Rotio led Dominican (19-9) with 18 points and three rebounds, while Adele Laskowski added 10 points and five rebounds.
