HOLY FAMILY AND PHILADELPHIA SET TO SQUARE OFF FOR CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
March 2, 2007
ORANGEBURG, NY ? Holy Family University and Philadelphia University are set to square off for the 2006-07 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC)Women's Basketball Tournament Championship after winning their semifinal games Friday afternoon. No. 1 Holy Family upended #5 Goldey-Beacom, 69-55, while No. 2 Philadelphia got past third-seeded USP, 66-64. Both games were played on the campus of Dominican College in Orangeburg, NY.
CACC Player of the Year Kelly Killion led Holy Family (27-2) with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists, while senior center Megan Bauer tallied 17 points and eight rebounds. Senior Chrissy Kosiek chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds and freshman forward Christine McCollum added 11 points.
Goldey-Beacom (18-11) kept things close in the first half behind senior guard Cherrise Graham and trailed by just four at intermission, 36-32. Graham registered 19 points in the half.
Holy Family extended its lead in the second half behind solid defense, holding the Lightning to 28.6-percent (10-of-35) shooting, including 0-for-5 from long range. Furthermore, the Tigers held Graham to just one bucket over the final 20 minutes of play. The Lightning shot 31.7-percent (20-of-63) from the floor for the game, while Holy Family converted 45.8-percent (22-of-48) of its opportunities.
Philadelphia (20-8) was able to upend USP, the defending tournament champion, behind 24 points from senior forward Meg Abele and 14 points and 15 rebounds from senior forward Alisha Ferguson. Junior guard Ashley Webster also scored in double-digits for Philadelphia with 13 points.
USP led for the majority of the game and owned its biggest lead (31-18) with 2:51 left in the first half. In the second half, USP led by as many as 10 (49-39) with 11:46 remaining. However, the Rams went on a 19-8 run over the next 8:06 to take its first lead of the half (58-57) with 3:40 on the clock.
At the end of the game, the Rams avoided disaster after getting called for a technical foul for having too many players on the court. Up by four with one second on the clock, Philadelphia was called for the technical as USP (19-10) was attempting to inbound the ball. USP All-CACC senior guard Shelby Rance sank both free-throws to pull the Devils to within two, 66-64. USP had one last chance to tie the score, but a desperation pass down court was knocked away by Ferguson and the Rams earned their first appearance in the CACC Championship game.
Rance led USP with 23 points on 5-for-11 shooting from 3-point land while fellow senior Rashanna Edwards added 12 points. Freshman center Erin Chesnavich contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore forward Allison Weiss tallied 13 points and seven boards.
