DOMINICAN AND CALDWELL SELECTED TO PLAY AT NCAA SOFTBALL REGIONAL
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 9, 2011) – Dominican College and Caldwell College have been selected to play in the upcoming NCAA Division II East Region Softball Tournament according to an announcement by the NCAA selection committee. The Chargers are making their third straight appearance in the tournament, while Caldwell has participated in seven of the last eight regionals. The Chargers are seeded fifth and the Cougars claimed the No. 6 seed.
Four teams will participate at each of 16 regional sites (64
total teams) across the country in
double-elimination tournaments. Regional competition will be
held May 13-15. Winners will advance to the super regionals
May 20-21. The finals will be held May 26-30 at James I.
Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va., and will be hosted by the West
Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the City of
Salem.
By winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship this past Saturday, the Lady Chargers secured the conference's automatic bid for the regional. The Lady Chargers went 4-0 in the CACC Tournament to improve to 34-16 overall and go into the regional having won 10 out of their last 11 games. Sophomore pitcher and right fielder Delaney Childers was named the Tournament MVP after picking up two wins and two saves, while hitting .364 at the plate.
DC will face the fourth-seeded Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, winners of the Northeast-10 Tournament, on Friday May 13th at 3:30 pm. The top-seeded Lions of Dowling College are the host site. The other teams in the bracket with Dominican and SCSU are #1 Dowling College and #8 Merrimack College.
The Pioneers of C.W. Post University, the second seed in the
East Region, will be the host site for the other half of the
regional, which includes Caldwell, C.W. Post, #3 Molloy College and
#7 New Haven.
Caldwell tied for fourth in the CACC regular-season standings and
advanced to the final day of the CACC Tournament for the ninth
straight year, losing to host Georgian Court University in
Saturday's elimination game. Senior pitcher Brittany Pulido earned
her 74th career victory with a three-hit shutout against Wilmington
University on the first day of the Tournament. She is tied with
former All-American Corinne Reiser for the most career wins at
Caldwell. Senior Patti Garofolo and junior Kelly Ryan were named to
the CACC All-Tournament Team.
Caldwell will face Molly in the opening round on Friday at 3:30 pm
at C.W. Post. The last time the regional was at C.W. Post was in
2008, when the Cougars defeated Georgian Court and Adelphi
University but lost to the host Pioneers and New Haven. Molloy,
which won the East Coast Conference Tournament this past weekend,
is the defending region champion.
