GEORGIAN COURT CROWNED 2009 CACC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONS

LAKEWOOD, NJ (May 2, 2009) - Host Georgian Court University captured the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Championship Saturday afternoon with their 2-0 shutout of the defending champion Caldwell College Cougars. The fourth-seeded Lions finished the tournament undefeated and will advance to NCAA Regional play as the automatic qualifier from the CACC with a 36-15 record. Caldwell leaves Lakewood with a 35-16-2 record and will await an at large bid to continue in post season play.

The championship game remained scoreless until the Lions awoke in the top of sixth All-Tournament selection Brooke Hull lined a double to left field to start the inning. Despite a pitching change from the Cougars, senior Courtney Cuevas followed with single to keep things rolling.  Sophomore Jessica Comiskey, also named to the All-Tournament team, drove in the winning runs with a double to the right side. In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars rallied but but the Georgian Court defence held strong, turning a double play to end the inning.  In the seventh, Caldwell had runners on first and second with one out before Diana Sanservera followed a strike out with an infield ground out to clinch the Lions' ninth CACC tournament championship.

The 2009 CACC Pitcher of the Year, Sansevera, lived up to her title, earning the Tournament MVP.  Sanservera completed the championship game giving up six hits, striking out four and walking none.

Second-seeded Caldwell opened day three of the tournament blanking Bloomfield College 7-0 in the Semi-Final game.  The Cougars turned in a six-run second inning to compliment the excellent pitching by Brittany Pulido. Pulido, threw a three hitter to quiet the Deacons dangerous bats.
