WILMINGTON SOFTBALL RANKED FIRST IN NORTHEAST REGION

March 27, 2008

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wilmington University softball team is ranked first according to the initial NCAA Division II Northeast Region Poll, which was released on March 26. Georgian Court University is fourth in the poll.

The Wildcats are currently 7-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) and 19-7 overall. Wilmington is led by sophomore pitcher Katie Turner, who is 9-2 with a 0.55 earned run average. Offensively, the Wildcats are led by senior shortstop Nicole Hays, who is hitting at a .379 clip with nine runs scored and 15 runs batted in.

The number one ranking is the highest ranking the softball program has ever received in school history. It also marks the first time since the Wildcats reclassified to NCAA Division II that any athletic program at Wilmington has been the top ranked team in the region.

Georgian Court is currently 4-0 in conference play and 15-5 overall. Junior Samantha Sasko leads the team with a 10-3 record and a 1.19 ERA. She has fanned 96 batters in 76.2 innings pitched. Senior catcher Heather Walker leads the Lions at the plate with a .467 batting average, four home runs and five doubles. Junior infielder Mallory Kirchner leads the club with 19 RBI.
