CAPARDI, SASKO, TURNER AND PULIDO EARN SOFTBALL WEEKLY HONORS

NEW HAVEN, CT - Gina Capardi of Caldwell College has earned Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Player of the Week honors for the week ending Sunday, March 30. Samantha Sasko of Georgian Court University and Katie Turner of Wilmington University were named co-Pitchers of the Week and Brittany Pulido of Caldwell was the choice for Rookie of the Week.

Capardi, a junior 2B from West Caldwell, NJ, hit .588 in a 5-1 week with nine RBI, 10 runs scored, two triples and one home run. She collected two hits in each of the final five games of the week and drove in three runs against Pace. In addition, she scored three runs in a game twice.

Sasko, a junior right-hander from Groveville, NJ, went 4-0 last week with a 0.28 ERA. She allowed only 19 hits in 25.0 innings of work while fanning 34 and walking only two batters. She picked up wins in both ends of a double-header against Post on Sunday.


Turner, a sophomore right-hander from Smyrna, DE, was 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA during the week. She threw a 3-hitter with eight strikeouts against both USP and St. Thomas Aquinas. She fanned 23 in 21.0 innings pitched while surrendering only 10 hits.

Pulido, a freshman righty from Ojai, CA, went 2-0 with a 1.58 ERA and one save last week. She pitched a 7-inning shutout against Nyack, allowing three hits and no walks while fanning five. Tossed two innings of scoreless relief in a win over Pace for her first career save.

Honorable Mention

Brianne Moore, Bloomfield (So., RHP, Clifton, NJ) - Went 2-0 last week with a 0.38 ERA. Fanned 18 in 18.0 IP.

Nicole Fortino, Georgian Court (Sr., 3B, Brick, NJ) - Hit .600 in a 6-0 week with one home run, four RBI and three runs.

Vickie Berardi, Bloomfield (So., Linden, NJ) - Hit .480 in a 5-3 week with one home run, six RBI and 10 runs scored.

Sarah Beck, Dominican (Jr., OF, Milton, NY) - Hit .481 in a 4-4 week with six RBI, five runs, three doubles and one triple.

Honorable Mention

Bloomfield - Bloomfield junior third baseman Mallorie Mathews drove in her 100th career run against Bridgeport on March 30th. Earlier in the season, she surpassed the 100 hit milestone. Brianne Moore threw two shutouts last week, giving her four on the season. The sophomore righty from Clifton allowed just one earned run on the week and had a 10-strikeout performance against Goldey-Beacom. Sophomore utility player Brittany DeVries registered eight sacrifice bunts this week and has set a new Bloomfield College single-season record with 14. As of March 23, Junior shortstop Vickie Berardi was 6th nationally in On Base Percentage with a mark of .576. After posting a .600 On Base Percentage last week, Berardi has raised her percentage to .586.

Caldwell - The Cougars opened CACC play with a pair of doubleheader sweeps of Nyack and Chestnut Hill, outscoring their opponents 36-3. Caldwell also split with regional foe Pace. Junior Gina Capardi's two-run homer broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the sixth inning of Game 2 with Pace to give the Cougars an 8-6 win. Senior Nicole Bodrog and sophomores Brittni Frantellizzi and Kyrie Timbrook had hits in every game this week, with Frantellizzi extending her hitting streak to 10 games.

Felician - Senior pitcher Dara DeSocio hit her first career homerun in Saturday's Game 2 loss to USP. She had earned her first save since her freshman season in Game 1. Senior cather Heather Van Dyke is riding a 13-game hitting streak after going 0 for 6 in the season-opening twinbill against NYIT. Van Dyke has a team-high 11 RBI out of the leadoff spot. Junior OF Jenna Krowl has struck out just twice in 53 plate appearances this season.

Georgian Court - GCU cracked the NFCA's top 25 (#25) for the first time in the program's Division II history. The Lions have won six straight games. The team has pitched eight shutouts in 2008, including a stretch of seven in eight games. 2B Mallory Kirchner launched two home runs in a 10-2 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas.

Post - Post went 1-5 last week. Senior Caitlin McAveney led the Eagles at the plate going 9-of-18 (.500) with two doubles and two runs batted in. She had a .611 slugging percentage and a .526 on-base percentage. Michelle Stotz was second on the team with a .353 batting average for the week, going 6-for-17 with a double, three runs scored and three RBI. McAveney leads the team in hitting this season with a .389 batting average, five doubles, six runs scored and seven RBI. Freshman Tierney Marceau is second on the team with a .367 batting average to go with four homeruns, 11 runs batted in and seven runs scored. McAveney is 5-5 in the pitcher's circle, with a 2.02 ERA. She has recorded 51 strikeouts and allowed only 18 walks this season.

USP - The Devils 4-2 win against Wilmington was their first against the Wildcats since the 2001 season - USP had lost their previous 13 times against Wilmington...The Devils have three more wins (6-10) than they did at this point of the season last year (3-13)...USP's 4-2 conference record is their best start of conference play since joining the CACC for the 2000 season.
