GEORGIAN COURT SET TO DEFEND CACC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

April 30, 2008

NEW HAVEN, CT-Georgian Court University, the defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Tournament Champion, has secured the top seed for the 2008 Tournament, which will be held from Thursday, May 1 to Saturday, May 3 at Caldwell College. The Lions won the CACC regular-season championship with a 22-2 record to go with a 37-12 overall mark. The winner of the tournament will receive the CACC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament.

Georgian Court and second seed Caldwell each earned a first-round bye in the six-team, double-elimination tournament. The Lions are ranked fourth in the Northeast Region and 20th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Poll. The host Cougars won nine of their final 12 games to finish with a 19-5 conference mark and a 30-20 overall record. Caldwell is ranked seventh in the Northeast Region.

The Lions and Cougars played for last season's CACC Championship, with Georgian Court emerging with a 7-3 victory. Georgian Court junior right-hander Samantha Sasko was named the Most Valuable Player of the last year's championship. She has continued that success this season, as she currently has a 26-6 record and leads the conference with 260 strikeouts.

Dominican College won six of its final eight conference games to capture the No. 3 seed. The Chargers finished with an 18-6 CACC mark and a 28-22 overall record. The Chargers will face No. 6 University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at noon on Thursday. The winner will move on to face No. 2 Caldwell at 2:00 pm. USP went 15-21 overall and 12-12 in conference play, setting a school record for conference wins. This is the first CACC Tournament appearance for the Devils since 2001. The Chargers and Devils split their season series, with USP winning the first game, 3-2, in 10 innings, and Dominican winning the nightcap, 7-1.

Holy Family University and Wilmington University both concluded the regular-season with 16-8 conference records, but Holy Family will serve as the No. 4 seed after winning a tie-breaker. The Tigers and No. 5 Wildcats will meet at noon on Thursday, with the winner advancing to face No. 1 Georgian Court. The Tigers and Wildcats split their double-header on April 16, with Holy Family winning the opener, 2-1, followed by a 3-1 triumph by Wilmington.
