PULIDO LEADS CALDWELL TO CACC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
May 2, 2008
CALDWELL, NJ-Caldwell College defeated Georgian Court University today, 2-0, to remain undefeated in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Tournament and gain a spot in Saturday's championship round. Top seeded Georgian Court will meet No. 4 Holy Family at 11:00 am for the right to play No. 2 Caldwell for the 2008 Championship.
Caldwell was led once again by freshman right-hander Brittany Pulido, who hurled her second consecutive three-hitter to earn her second victory of the tournament. She went 7.0 innings and struck out four batters. Caldwell plated both of its runs in the fourth inning, a rally that was started by an Alyssa Speno one-out single to center field. Sophomore Brittni Frantellizzi followed with a single to right field, moving Speno to second base. Two batters later, freshman right fielder Patti Garofolo hit a two-out single to right-center field to score Speno. Frantellizzi also scored on the play as a result of a Georgian Court error.
Georgian Court rallied and put runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Stacey Ryan hit a two-out single and classmate Autumn Florez followed by getting hit by a pitch. The runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch, but Pulido induced a grounder to second base to end the game.
Georgian Court, the defending CACC Tournament champion, will face Holy Family at 11:00 am tomorrow. The Tigers remained alive by eliminating No. 3 Dominican College, 3-1. Sophomore right-hander Jody Searfoss earned the win by going the distance and allowing only five hits and one run to go with seven strikeouts.
Holy Family scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning. Senior catcher Kim Hockenbrock provided the major blow with a two-out double, plating two runs. She later scored on a passed ball, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Dominican scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh on a home run to center field from freshman catcher Nicole Scarillo.
Dominican won the first game of the day, 3-1, over No. 6 USP behind the pitching of sophomore Danielle Garrison, who surrendered only three hits and one run in eliminating the Devils. USP took an early lead, however, as freshman center fielder Dayna Phillips led off the game with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch. But, Garrison was able to settle down and USP didn't threaten again.
Garrison helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while senior 1B Kristine Knuth drove in the other two runs with a double to center field in the third inning.
