TWO EXTRA-INNING GAMES HIGHLIGHT FIRST DAY OF CACC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

CALDWELL, NJ-Two games went to extra innings today to highlight the first day of action at the 2008 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Tournament. The top two seeds, Georgian Court and Caldwell, advanced to the winners bracket and will clash tomorrow for the right to play in Saturday's championship round.
In the first game of the day, No. 4 Holy Family defeated No. 5 Wilmington in nine innings, 1-0. Freshman right-hander Angela DiBenneditto earned the win by going the distance and allowing only five hits and fanning eight while not walking a batter. Wilmington sophomore Katie Turner suffered the tough loss despite hurling 8.1 innings and allowing one run on six hits. The winning run came with one out in the ninth when Holy Family put runners on second and third after a Wilmington error. Sophomore Dolores Brown stepped to the plate and sent a grounder to second base, which allowed junior Sarah Marsteller to cross home plate with the only run of the game.
In the second game of the day, No. 6 USP upset third seeded Dominican 3-2 in eight innings behind the pitching of sophomore Rachel Morgan. Morgan went the distance and allowed two runs on six hits while fanning 10. Laura Hamilton started the eighth by reaching on an error, and then went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hamilton was then driven home by a single by senior Carolynn Snavely. Dominican put two runners on base in the bottom of the frame, but Morgan was able to get out of the jam.
Top seeded Georgian Court followed with a 2-1 triumph over Holy Family behind the pitching of CACC Pitcher of the Year, Samantha Sasko. Sasko worked 7.0 innings and allowed seven hits and one run, while fanning seven. Her counterpart, sophomore Jody Searfoss, allowed only three hits and two runs in six innings of work. The winning run came when Stacey Ryan doubled home senior Heather Walker, who started the inning with a single.
No. 2 Caldwell had no trouble with USP in fourth game of the day, as freshman Brittany Pulido hurled a 3-hitter to earn the 7-0 shutout. With the win, Caldwell head coach Dean Johnson notched his 400th career victory.
The Cougars were led at the plate by senior left fielder Alyssa Speno, who homered and went 2-for-2 with a run and three runs batted in. All-CACC 3B Nicole Bodrog went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
The final game of the day saw Wilmington get eliminated from the double-elimination tournament, 9-4, by Dominican. Sophomore shortstop Cara Piasecki led the Chargers with a 4-for-4 effort with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Senior 3B Jackie Terpstra went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, and freshman Shayla Esgro went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
