CALDWELL AND GEORGIAN COURT BOTH FALL ON SECOND DAY OF SOFTBALL REGIONAL

May 8, 2008

BROOKVILLE, NY--The Caldwell College and Georgian Court University softball teams each suffered 2-0 losses on the second day of competition at the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament at C.W. Post University. No. 4 Caldwell was upended by top seeded C.W. Post, while No. 5 Georgian Court was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament by No. 8 New Haven. Caldwell will play an elimination game on Friday against No. 3 Adelphi.

C.W. Post scored both of its runs against Caldwell (34-21) in the top of the second, when Holly Eringis hit a two-run single. The Cougars managed just one hit in the game, a bunt single by senior Carrie Flasphaler in the third, off of Pioneers' pitcher Samantha Yodowitz, who also struck out three while walking none for the shutout. Freshman Brittany Pulido also pitched well, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking none in seven innings. Caldwell was hampered by three errors, all in the decisive second inning.

Sophomore pitcher Breanne Gleason pitched a one-hitter and went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead New Haven past Georgian Court, 2-0. New Haven improves to 26-20 with the win, while Georgian Court ends its season with a record of 39-16.

Two Charger home runs made the difference in the contest, as sophomore second baseman Courtney Garland led off the bottom of the second with a solo shot to dead center, and junior third baseman Jessica Medina followed an inning later with a solo home run to left field.

Gleason shut down the high-powered Lion offense, striking out 12 in seven innings, and did not allow a hit until Stacey Ryan's single in the top of the seventh broke up the no-hitter.

Junior Samantha Sasko took the loss for the Lions despite giving up only four hits and striking out six.
