CALDWELL AND GEORGIAN COURT TO COMPETE AT NCAA NORTHEAST REGION SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

May 5, 2008

NEW HAVEN, CT-Caldwell College is the fourth seed and Georgian Court University is fifth at the 2008 NCAA Division II Northeast Region Softball Tournament, which will be held at C.W. After facing each other for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament Championship on Saturday, the Cougars and Lions will square off again on Wednesday at 2:00 pm in a first round contest.

The Cougars, who received the CACC's automatic bid to the regional by winning the CACC Tournament this past weekend, is currently 33-20 and is coached by Dean Johnson. The Cougars qualified for their fourth NCAA Regional in five years by winning three straight games to win the CACC Championship. Senior third-baseman Nicole Bodrog batted .500 with six runs and two runs batted in to receive the tournament's Most Valuable Player award. Joining Bodrog on the All-Tournament Team were junior Gina Capardi, sophomores Brittni Frantellizzi and Danielle Genovese and freshman Brittany Pulido. Capardi is the 2008 CACC Player of the Year.

This season, Caldwell has posted a 7-6 record against the other teams in the regional, including a 3-1 mark against Georgian Court. The Cougars took two out of three meetings from eighth-seeded New Haven, split doubleheaders with top-seeded C.W. Post and No. 7 NYIT, and were swept by third-seeded Adelphi.

Georgian Court is currently 39-14 and is making its second straight appearance in the regional tournament. The Lions won their first game last year, 5-4, against Adelphi before falling to UMass-Lowell and Dowling. The Lions, who are coached by CACC Coach of the Year, Jeff Franquet, are 3-6 against the rest of the teams in the tournament, including 1-3 against Caldwell. GCU split double-headers with Adelphi and C.W. Post and lost a single game to NYIT.

The Lions are led by CACC Pitcher of the Year, Samantha Sasko. The Lions also feature two other first team All-CACC players in senior catcher Heather Walker and freshman outfielder Jessica Comiskey.
