BROOKVILLE, N.Y.-The Caldwell College softball team withstood a late comeback attempt to defeat Georgian Court University, 9-6 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the C.W. Post Softball Complex. The victory advances the Cougars (34-20) through the winner's bracket to play top-seeded C.W. Post on Thursday, May 8. Freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) had three hits and drove in two runs as Caldwell tallied 12 hits in the win.

Two runs in the first and four more in the second allowed the fourth-seeded Cougars to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. Forte singled home senior Nicole Bodrog for the game's first run. Junior Gina Capardi also scored in the first on an error. Then in the second, a two-run double by Capardi sparked a four-run inning that also saw Forte and sophomore Danielle Genovese single home runs. Genovese put Caldwell ahead 7-0 with a run-scoring single that plated freshman Patti Garofolo in the third.

But Georgian Court, seeded fifth in the tournament, battled back with five runs in the fifth inning to make the score 7-5 Caldwell. Senior catcher Heather Walker struck the big blow with a two-out grand slam. Then in the sixth, Julie Sito made it a one-run game with a sacrifice fly that scored Michelle Ferraiuolo. But the Cougars scored a pair of insurance runs when the Lions dropped a fly ball with two outs in the seventh, allowing senior Alyssa Speno and sophomore Sydney Day to come home.

As was the case in Caldwell's 11-4 victory over the Lions in the final of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, the top of the order dominated Georgian Court pitching. Bodrog, Genovese, Capardi and Forte combined to go 9-for-14 (.643) with six RBIs and five runs. Freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido went the distance and gave up six runs on six hits to improve to 17-7 on the season. Samantha Sasko lasted just 1 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits.

Caldwell is scheduled to play host C.W. Post on Thursday, May 8 at 4:30 p.m.
