Lakewood, NJ ? Autumn Florez, a softball and tennis student-athlete from Manchester, New Jersey, represented Georgian Court University and the Central Atlantic College Conference at the annual NCAA Leadership Conference in May. The NCAA selected Florez from a pool of student-athletes who were nominated by their respective institutions.
A student's experience while attending a university not only affects them during their time in school, but also greatly affects their future goals and aspirations. The NCAA strives to develop more than athletes, the organization seeks to build character, responsibility, excellent decision making in thousands of young adults. To achieve this goal the NCAA created the annual Leadership Conference. The Conference, held in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, brings together NCAA student-athletes from Divisions I, II, and III to openly discuss issues affecting student-athletes on their campuses and in their communities.
Laura Liesman, Director of Athletics & Recreation said of Autumn's leadership, "Autumn is an exceptional example of a GCU woman. She is a superior student, an emerging leader on campus and in the community, and a talented two-sport athlete. I'm looking forward to seeing her bring these newly acquired skills back to campus to develop strong leadership programs for all the GCU student-athletes."
Florez has made quite an impact on the Georgian Court Community in her three short years at the University. Autumn demonstrates her ability to lead both on the diamond and on the tennis court and through her involvement with the community. Her activities include reading to public elementary school students as part of the Athletic Department's outreach program. In addition to helping special needs children at the Tournament of Champions held on the GCU campus, Florez is also a member of W.I.L.D., Women in Leadership Development. Autumn is currently in Croatia with other W.I.L.D. participants to exchange leadership views with other students.
"It was an exciting experience where I was able to exchange ideas with other student-athletes, recognize my weakness and develop my strengths to create positive, significant, dramatic change. I am grateful for the opportunity I was given to attend the Conference and I am looking forward to developing an action plan to put into place at Georgian Court," said Florez of her experience at the conference.
