ECAC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT KICKS OFF AT GEORGIAN COURT

May 13, 2006

Lakewood, NJ ? The 2006 ECAC Softball Tournament began on Saturday on the campus of Georgian Court University. The four teams participating in this year's tournament include three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) institutions. The participants are #1 Dominican College, #2 Georgian Court University, #3 Felician College and #4 University of Bridgeport.

In the first game of the day, Dominican College was upset by the University of Bridgeport.

Samantha Mantor (Fresno, CA) held the Charger offense in check by allowing only one earned run on four hits. The Purple Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and held on for the 3-2 victory.

Georgian Court and Felician squared off in game two and Lion starting pitcher Samantha Sasko (Yardville, NJ) threw a complete game shutout for the win. Sasko struck out a season high 13 batters and Ashley Wierema (Mundelein, IL) provided the offense with a two run single in the fifth inning. That was all that Sasko would need, as GCU went on to the 3-0 win.

Game three was an elimination contest between Dominican and Felician. The strong pitching of Dara DeSocio (Cliffside Park, NJ) led the Golden Falcons to the win, as she allowed only five hits while striking out 10 batters to lead the way to a 3-0 victory.

In the final game of the day, Georgian Court played Bridgeport. The Lions got off to a good start behind the bat of Nicole Fortino (Brick, NJ), who belted her 11th home run of the season in the first inning to give GCU a 2-0 lead. The Purple Knights answered back in the top of the second and cut the lead in half. In the third, GCU broke the game open scoring four times to extend the lead to 6-1. Bridgeport was able to narrow the gap to 6-3 on a sacrifice fly, but fell short of the comeback. Anna Leighty (Carney's Point, NJ) pitched 5.0 strong innings for the win and Sasko close the door for her second save of the season.

Felician will play Bridgeport at 10 am to start the day on Sunday, with the winner advancing to face Georgian Court for the title at noon.
