GEORGIAN COURT FALLS TO BRIDGEPORT IN ECAC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

May 14, 2006

LAKEWOOD, NJ ? Pitching was the name of the game on the second day of the ECAC Tournament, as no team was able to score more than two runs in any of the games. The University of Bridgeport took home the title as they won three games today.

In the first game of the day, Felician College played Bridgeport. Samantha Mantor (Fresno, CA) started for Bridgeport and kept the Golden Falcon batters at bay allowing only one earned run in a 2-1 win. Felician managed only five hits against Mantor who struck out five. Mantor also went 4-4 with a RBI at the plate to help her own cause.

Mantor was once against dominant in the second game of the day against Georgian Court, and allowed only seven hits in the 2-0 complete game shutout. Mantor was matched by GCU's Samantha Sasko who was equal to the task but suffered the loss. Suzanne Parr (Juneau, AK) provided the offense in the first inning as she knocked in two runs on a base hit.

In the championship game, Anna Leighty (Carney's Point, NJ) of Georgian Court went 6.0 innings allowing one run on only two base hits. However, Mantor matched Leighty pitch for pitch as the Lions could only scrape together one run on a Heather Walker RBI single in the first. Sasko relieved Leighty in the seventh and held the Purple Knights scoreless. In the eighth using the international rule, Bridgeport started a player on second base and scored the go ahead run on a Mantor single to leftfield. The Lions had two runners on in the home half of the inning but Mantor slammed the door shut to preserve the victory and the championship.

Mantor was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after finishing with a 4-1 record with a 3.88 ERA, while batting 8-17 (.470) with four RBI's and two runs scored.

Georgian Court concludes the season with a 29-17 record
