CALDWELL, DOMINICAN AND FELICIAN REMAIN ALIVE IN CACC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

May 5, 2006

CALDWELL, NJ ? Caldwell College, Dominican College and Felician College have all advanced to the final day of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Tournament, which will conclude tomorrow in Caldwell, NJ. Felician, the tournament's sixth seed, downed #5 Bloomfield and #3 Georgian Court today while #1 Caldwell upended #2 Dominican.

Dominican (36-16) will face Felician (25-22)in an elimination game tomorrow at 11:00 am for the right to face Caldwell in the championship. By virtue of being the only unbeaten team in the tournament, Caldwell needs just one win to secure the title, while Felician or Dominican would have to beat the Cougars twice.

Caldwell (35-15) was led by sophomore outfielder Carrie Flasphaler in its victory over Dominican, as she blasted a two-run home run in the second inning to help the Cougars jump to a 3-0 lead. Caldwell eventually built a 9-1 edge after the fourth inning and never looked back. Senior right-hander Jessica Saunders earned the win by going the distance and allowing eight hits and three runs to go with seven strikeouts. Sophomore left fielder Alyssa Speno and senior shortstop Gina D'Amico each drove in two runs for the victors.

In the first game of the day, Felician senior right-hander Jen Barnes tossed a no-hitter against Bloomfield (16-29) in an 8-0 triumph. Barnes walked four and struck out six. The Golden Falcons scored all of their runs in the seventh inning and were helped by three Deacon errors. Junior Meredith Rainer led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI, while senior Kelly Barton went 2-for-4 with one RBI. All eight of Felician's runs were scored by different players.

Felician rode the momentum to a 12-3 victory over Georgian Court (26-14) later in the day, as the Golden Falcons tallied five runs in the fourth inning and seven in the fifth. Holly Van Dyke led the onslaught by going 2-for-3 and driving in five runs. She knocked in two runs in the fourth inning with a single and finished the day with a bases-clearing double in the fifth. Sophomore righty Dara DeSocio pitched all five innings and allowed four hits and three runs.
