NEW HAVEN, CT ? The 12th-ranked Caldwell College softball team will participate in the 2006 NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament for the third consecutive year. The tournament will be held at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., beginning Thursday, May 11. The Cougars, who captured their third straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament this past Saturday, are seeded fourth and will face fifth-seeded Massachusetts-Lowell in the first round.

The field includes five teams that the Cougars have played this season. Caldwell, coached by Dean Johnson, split a doubleheader with top-seeded and 16th-ranked C.W. Post on Apr. 20. The Cougars also split with No. 3 seed and host Bryant on Mar. 26, swept two from No. 6 Queens College and defeated eighth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University twice at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida. Adelphi, the tournament's No. 2 seed, took two from Caldwell on Apr. 9 in Garden City, N.Y. The other team in the field is seventh-seeded Le Moyne College, who eliminated the Cougars at last year's regional en route to capturing the Northeast Region title.

This is the first time the NCAA Division II region tournaments will have eight teams competing for regional titles, up from six in past years. The winners of the eight region tournaments will earn a spot in the NCAA Division II Women's College World Series, held May 18-22 at the James L. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.

The last time the Northeast Region Tournament was held at Bryant University, Caldwell captured the region title with a 3-2 victory over Merrimack College in nine innings to advance to the 2004 Women's College World Series. Twelve players from the 2004 squad are on the current roster, including senior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville), who was chosen the 2006 CACC Tournament's Most Valuable Player after driving in the game-winning run in the sixth inning of a 3-1 victory over Dominican College this past Saturday.
