Lakewood, NJ The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has recognized Georgian Court University as an academic school of excellence, announcing the softball team as one of its Top Academic Teams of 2004-05. The Lions, who ranked 14th nationally of 49 NCAA Division II schools cited by the NCAA, were #1 in team GPA of all schools in the northeast region, ranking ahead of neighboring institutions Adelphi University (15th) and Caldwell College (29th).

The NFCA, consisting of coaches from the NCAA, NAIA, Junior College and High School level, honors teams in each competitive division with the academic honors yearly. Eligible teams have amassed a collective 3.20 or better through the entire academic calendar year. Awarded schools are honored every October.

The honor caps a long list of academic achievements by the womens softball team in 2005. Junior Kimberly Griffiths was named the GCU Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Sherry Keech 05 was awarded the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conferences Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the conclusion of the season. Griffiths and Jade Reid were named to the CACC All-Academic Softball Team as well. A biochemistry major, Griffiths was also named an ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-American 2nd Team District II student-athlete, one of the highest academic honors bestowed to NCAA athletes.

With 12 student-athletes returning to the team in 2006, the team is hoping for continued success not only on the field but in the academic arena as well.
