Lakewood, NJ – Georgian Court University softball junior Kimberly Griffiths (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Regional) achieved one of the highest academic honors in collegiate sports, being named a 2nd-Team selection of the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II College Division Softball Team. The award is the first and only to be generated by Georgian Court University this academic year.

Griffiths, a co-captain this season, steadied the Lions through a 28-16 season, which included second place regular season and post-season finishes in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The Biochemistry major, who sports a 3.85 GPA, batted .274 this season, including six doubles, 17 RBI, and a team-high 10 sacrifice hits.

Griffiths, who was awarded the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award at GCU, was one of only seven non-seniors who placed on the district’s top two teams. She joined Caldwell College’s Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD), and Holy Family University’s Emily Kerner (Morrisville, PA), who both also landed 2nd-team honors, as the only CACC representatives.

Griffiths' 3.85 GPA was the 6th highest among first and second teamers, and she was one of only two athletes hailing from New Jersey to receive the honor. Moravian College’s Meagan Hennessy, a junior, pitcher for the Greyhounds, is a Freehold native.

Selected and announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America, the All-District and national All-American honors are sponsored by ESPN the Magazine. District II College Division nominations include athletes from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia, and who compete in NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA. First team district members will move on to national Academic All-American consideration next month.
