CONCORDIA MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS TEAMS ADVANCE TO NCAA QUARTER-FINALS

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 11, 2011) – The Concordia College men’s and women’s tennis teams both advanced to the quarter-finals of the NCAA Division II Tournament with victories in Wednesday’s round of 16. Both teams will return to action Thursday morning.

The Concordia men earned a hard-fought 5-4 win over Hawaii Pacific despite falling behind 2-1 after doubles play. The Clipper doubles points came from the No. 3 team of David Tisserand and Andreas Lindell.

Down 2-1, Concordia rallied to take four singles matches against Hawaii Pacific, including three-set triumphs by No. 1 singles player Andrey Boldarev and No. 6 Lindell. Boldarev dropped the first set to Petr Michnev, 5-7, but came back to take the next two by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Lindell took the first set against Ari Davis, 6-3. He fell 5-7 in the second set, but took the important point by clinching the match with a 6-3 win in the third.  Also notching singles wins for Concordia were Tisserand in the four spot, 6-2, 6-2, and Tamas Dobrotka at No. 5 by a score of 7-5, 6-3.

Concordia will face Rockhurst in the quarter-finals Thursday at 9:00 am in an attempt to return to the Final 4. Rockhurst defeated Nebraska-Kearny, 5-0, to advance to face the Clippers.

The Concordia women got past Augustana College, 5-1, to advance to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2009. The Clippers received wins from the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams to take a 2-1 lead entering singles play. The No. 1 team was Ola Roberts and Yuliya Plevako (8-2 win) while the other win came from the tandem of Adeline Brennan and Anna S. O. Mendes (8-5 win).

In singles play, the Clippers got wins from Roberts (6-2, 6-0), Plevako (6-1, 6-1) and No. 4 Clara Catanzano (7-6, 6-1).

Concordia will face Barry University at 1:00 pm Thursday. Barry defeated Cameron 5-0 in the round of 16.
