CONCORDIA MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS TEAMS ADVANCE TO NCAA SWEET 16
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 3, 2011) – The Concordia College men’s and women’s tennis teams have qualified for the NCAA Division II “Sweet 16” after collecting victories in the East Region Tournament earlier this week. The men’s team defeated CACC foe, Philadelphia University, 5-0 to move onto the next round, while the women upended Southern New Hampshire University, 5-1.
The Concordia men return to the round of 16 and will face off
against Hawaii Pacific on
Wednesday, May 11th. The Clippers advanced to the NCAA
Tournament semi-finals last season.
With the win over the Penmen, the Clipper women will meet Augustana College in the round of 16. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will be held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
For the men, the No. 1 doubles team of Geza Bazula and Tamas Dobrotka earned an 8-4 win against the Rams, while No. 2 Andrey Boldarev and Ricardo Frey got an 8-3 win. Andreas Lindell and David Tisserand collected the third point with an 8-3 win to put the team up 3-0 heading into singles play.
Lindell was off the court first with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 singles position. Dobrotka finished off the Rams at the No. 4 single spot, winning 6-2, 6-2. The Clippers also defeated Philadelphia in last season’s regional by the same 5-0 score. Concordia is now 22-3 overall this season and ranked third nationally.
The 22nd-ranked Concordia women faced off with #29 Southern New Hampshire and came away with a 5-1 win. The Clippers swept the three doubles matches. The victories came from the No. 1 team of Ola Roberts and Yuliya Plevako, No. 2 Maria Ortiz and Juliana Frey and No. 3 Ana S.O. Mendes and Adeline Brennan.
The Clippers clinched the victory when No. 4 Clara Catanzano and No. 6 Adeline Brennan notched singles wins.
The Clippers now stand 16-2 overall this season.
