SGOUROS TABBED MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Manoli Sgouros of Philadelphia University has been tabbed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 17. David Kazakevich of the University of the Sciences was the pick for Rookie of the Week.

Sgouros, a 5-7 junior from Forest Hills, N.Y., went 2-0 this week at #1 doubles with his partner Kyle Burke by scores of 8-0 and 8-1. He kept his record clean at #2 singles, not allowing a single point scored on him.

Kazakevich, a 5-8 freshman from Richboro, Pa., went undefeated in both singles and doubles last week. He opened the week at #1 singles with a win over CHC’s Mario Gutierrez  7-5, 6-1. In that match he trailed 4-3 in first set and came back to win 10 of the last 12 games.  Against East Stroudsburg, he had a 6-4, 6-2 win at #2 singles. He also won both #1 doubles matches on the week.

Honorable Mention

David Tisserand, Concordia (Fr., Roquefort la Bedoule, France) - Went undefeated in singles and doubles on the week.  Yielded only one game to Post.

Mario Gutierrez, Chestnut Hill (Sr., 5-8, Malaga, Spain) - Gutierrez was 2-1 at #1 singles and 3-0 at #2 doubles this week to help Chestnut Hill capture the #4 seed in the CACC Tournament.

CACC Team Notes

Concordia - The Clippers finished out the CACC regular season with a 9-0 sweep over Post.  With the win over Post the Clippers earned the 2011 CACC Regular Season Champion with a perfect 6-0 record.  In the six games in the CACC the Clippers did not drop a set to a CACC opponent.  The Clippers will play Queens College on Monday before hosting the Chestnut Hill College Griffins on Tuesday in the CACC semi-finals as they look to defend their conference title. 

Philadelphia - The Rams kept their winning streak alive this week as they took their sixth and seventh straight wins by beating Cabrini and Post. Their CACC record of 5-1 holds them in the #2 spot in the conference heading into the CACC Championship semi-finals this week. 

USciences - David Kazakevich (Richboro, Pa.) remained undefeated while playing in the #1 singles slot with a straight set win vs. Chestnut Hill. He is 4-0 at #1 singles and now 9-3 overall.  Likewise, Alvaro Vargas is undefeated playing at #2 singles with his win vs. Chestnut Hill. Alvaro is 4-0 at #2 singles and 8-4 overall. The Devils concluded their regular season this week, capturing their last two conference matches to finish in third place.  They will face Philadelphia University in the CACC semi-finals on Tuesday  with the winner taking on the winner of the Concordia-Chestnut Hill match for the CACC Championship on Thursday.
