PHILADELPHIA AND USP SELECTED TO PLAY AT NCAA MEN'S TENNIS REGIONAL

NEW HAVEN, CT - Philadelphia University and the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia have earned two of the six at-large berths into the 2009 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis East Region Tournament. Philadelphia is the No. 6 seed, while USP earned the No. 8 seed.

Philadelphia will face off against No. 3 seed Stonehill College at Queens College in Flushing, NY.  The match will be played on Thursday, May 7 at 3 p.m., and the winner will advance to Friday to play the winner of #2 Queens vs. #7 Bentley at 9:00 a.m.  The winner of that match will go on to the 16-team single-elimination finals, held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida, from May 14-16.

Philadelphia won the first-ever Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament Championship on April 23, defeating USP. The squad's No. 1 singles player, freshman Adrian Torroella-Cruz, won the CACC singles championship and teamed with classmate Manoli Sgouros to win the doubles title.

The Devils drew the #8 seed in the regional tournament. USP will face East Coast Conference champion Concordia College, the region's #1 seed, on Friday, May 8. The match is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.

Leading the way for the Devils at the number one singles position will be sophomore Francisco Garcia. Garcia, a transfer from Division I Belmont University, is 7-1 in his last eight completed matches and 9-10 overall with the majority of his matches at the top spot in the order.
