PHILADELPHIA CLINCHES INAUGURAL CACC MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 23, 2009) - The Philadelphia University men's tennis team upended the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Devils, 5-0, to claim the first-ever Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Team Championship on Thursday evening at Chestnut Hill College. This year was the CACC's inaugural season of men's tennis as a sponsored sport.
The win gives Philadelphia University its most conference championships in the CACC (five) in a single year, as other titles were won by women's cross country, women's tennis and men's and women's basketball.
At #1 doubles, the freshman team of Adrian Torroella-Cruz and Manoli Sgouros teamed up to defeat USP sophomore Francisco Garcia and freshman Bill Fine 8-3.
The sophomore team of Tom McAvoy and Seppi Hutter won 8-3 at #2 doubles over Ricardo Martins and Paul Caceres while #3 doubles team of sophomore Mario Bermeo and freshman Eric Guerrero defeated Chris Lukose and Dan Rubin in a hard fought 9-8 (7-5) set.
Both Sgouros and Hutter took their singles points to secure the 5-0 win and subsequent CACC title for the Rams.
The CACC Individual Tennis Tournament will begin on Friday morning at 9:00 am at Chestnut Hill. There will be a 16-player singles bracket, along with an 8-team doubles draw. A champion will be crowned in both on Saturday after the action starts back up at 9:00 am.
