PURNELL NAMED CACC MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Philadelphia University's Ryan Purnell has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Sept. 11. Spyros Stergiotis of Wilmington University was tabbed Rookie of the Week.

Purnell, a 5-8 senior midfielder from Hamilton, Bermuda, led Philadelphia to a 2-0 week with three goals and one assist. He tallied two goals and one assist in a CACC win over Concordia, and added a goal in a non-conference victory over East Stroudsburg.

Stergiotis, a 5-9 freshman goalkeeper from Toronto, Canada, helped Wilmington earn a 1-1 tie against regionally-ranked Merrimack College with five saves in 110 minutes.

Honorable Mention  
Mushe Wamulume, Chestnut Hill (So., M, 6-0, Media, PA) - Scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Nyack to start the CACC slate.

Ekene Okereke, Concordia (So., F, 6-0, Belifield, Germany) - Scored all three of his team’s goals last week in two matches.

Jadean Blasse, Felician (Jr., F, 5-10, Willingboro, NJ) - Set a school-record with five goals in a 12-0 win over Lincoln (PA).

Seydou Ba, Holy Family (Sr., F, 6-0, Philadelphia, PA) - Notched one goal, including the game-winner in double-overtime, along with one assist, in a 3-2 win over Caldwell.

Joe Baccielo, Post (So., F, 6-1, Stratford, CT) - Scored the game-winning goal in a victory over Felician.

CACC Notes

Bloomfield - Senior midfielder Juan Ramirez (Medellin, Columbia) notched his first goal of the season Saturday afternoon, converting a penalty kick in the Deacons’ 3-1 setback against Southern Connecticut State University.  Cody Sherman (Denville, NJ) made three saves in goal for Bloomfield in the setback.

Caldwell - The Cougars lost a hard-fought, double-overtime game at Holy Family 3-2 on Saturday despite sophomore Mosiah Whyte’s fifth goal of the season. Whyte has scored 13 goals in his last 12 games for the Cougars. Junior midfielder Donald Kafer had the other Caldwell goal in the team’s first loss of the season. This week the Cougars host Molloy on Tuesday and Post on Saturday while traveling to play Bridgeport on Thursday.

Chestnut Hill - Junior goalkeeper Mike Goldstein (Pennsauken, NJ) and the Chestnut Hill College defense have now played 290:00 of scoreless soccer, as the Griffins have gone 2-0-1 without allowing a goal this season.

Concordia - The Clippers lost both their games by one goal, 2-1 and 3-2. last week. Sophomore Ekene Okereke scored all three Clippers’ goals on his eight attempted shots. On Saturday, Goldey-Beacom will visit Concordia for a CACC showdown.
 
Felician - Felician set a school scoring record in a 12-0 home victory over Lincoln-PA on Thursday. The Golden Falcons found the back of the net eight times in the first 25 minutes. Five different Golden Falcons – junior Jadean Blasse, sophomore Azedine Maazouzi, and freshmen Jason Garay, Jose Campos, and Danny Hoyos – registered their first career goals in the contest, with Blasse coming off the bench to set a school record with five goals. Freshman GK Anthony Tsouhnikas enjoyed a two-save shutout in his collegiate debut. Senior F Mike Azzato scored three goals in two games last week, matching his career total entering the 2011 season.

Holy Family - Senior Seydou Ba scored his fifth goal of the season in the 109th minute to lift Holy Family over Caldwell College, 3-2, in double-overtime.  It marked Ba’s second game-winning goal in overtime in the past ten days.  Freshmen Keith Crews and Nicolas Delgado each scored their first collegiate goal in the win against the Cougars.   
 
Philadelphia - PhilaU outscored East Stroudsburg and Concordia, 6-2 this week, as Ryan Purnell led the surge with three goals.  Sophomore Mark Holman had the game-winner against Concordia and rookie Dominic Rodriguez scored his first career goal vs. ESU.  This week the Rams head to Wilmington (9/14) and Felician (9/17) for a pair of CACC matchups.    
 
Post - Post University’s men’s soccer team went 1-0-1 this week after playing Le Moyne to a 0-0 draw and defeating Felician 3-1. Three Eagles including Francis Eno, Joe Baccielo, and Byron Garcia all scored goals in the game. Looking ahead, the Eagles host Bloomfield at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday and then travel to Caldwell on Saturday.

Wilmington - Freshman goalkeeper Spyros Stergiotis played his best game of the season to help the Wildcats earn a 1-1 tie against #7 regionally-ranked Merrimack College.
