KAVANAGH CLAIMS MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF WEEK HONORS

NEW HAVEN, CT (August 31, 2009) - Ethan Kavanagh of Wilmington University has claimed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Soccer Player of the Week honors for the opening week of the 2009 season. Chris Skarbelis of Caldwell College and Travis Lobb of Philadelphia University were named co-Rookies of the Week.

Kavanagh, a 6-5 sophomore goalkeeper from Woodstown, NJ, led Wilmington to two wins in the opening week of the season, including a 2-1 victory over #19 East Stroudsburg. The only goal he allowed against ESU was on a penalty kick. He came up with nine saves on the week.

Skarbelis and Lobb both notched their first collegiate goals in their first collegiate action last week. Skarbelis, a 5-5 freshman midfielder from North Andover, MA, scored against Bloomsburg in a 2-1 loss. Lobb, a 6-3 freshman defender from Lititz, PA, also found the back of the net in his first collegiate game, a 4-3 loss to Millersville.

Honorable Mention

Joe Wright, Dominican (Sr., F, 6-0, Stratford, England) - Posted two goals in a season-opening 3-2 triumph over Assumption.

Quincy Small, Felician (Sr., F, 5-9, Linden, Guyana) - Tallied three first half goals in a 3-1 win over Saint Rose.

Adrian Ibanez, Nyack (Jr., GK, 6-1, Toronto, Canada) - Recorded a shutout with five saves, including a PK save, in a 1-0 victory over AIC.

CACC Notes 

Bloomfield - The Deacons return to action on Sept. 2 against Queens College. Sophomore midfielder Carlos Brufau netted his first goal as a Deacon in the loss to NYIT. Andy Aguilar assisted the goal on a corner kick.

Caldwell - The Cougars began the 2009 campaign with a 2-1 loss to Bloomsburg at the Nyack Tournament last week. Freshman midfielder Chris Skarbelis knocked in the rebound off a shot by freshman midfielder Nick Bibbs for the Cougars' only goal of the game. Caldwell was scheduled to face American International on Saturday in the tournament's second game, but the match was rained out. The Cougars' next game is Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Queens College.



Felician - After tallying three goals all of last season, senior forward Quincy Small scored three times in the first half of Felician's second game of 2009, an eventual 3-1 win over Saint Rose at Stonehill's Skyhawks Kickoff Classic on Saturday.

Holy Family - The Holy Family men's soccer team lost its season opener to visiting Davis and Elkins, 2-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Mark Ferretti was strong in his first game with a Tiger uniform. He stopped eight shots, including a penalty kick. Holy Family's next game is on Wednesday, September 2 at Mercy College. Then, the Tigers will spend Labor Day weekend in Johnstown, Pa. to take on Pittsburgh-Johnstown (Sunday) and Alderson-Broaddus (Monday).

Philadelphia - The Rams lost their season-opener at #6 nationally-ranked Millersville, falling just short in a 4-3 loss.

Wilmington - Sophomore goalkeeper Ethan Kavanaugh played stellar in two victories last week. He held #19 East Stroudsburg to only a penalty kick goal in a 2-1 victory. Against NYIT, he came up with big saves all game, especially a breakaway save that secured the win with one second left on the clock.
