DOMINIAN MEN AND HOLY FAMILY WOMEN FALL AT NCAA SOCCER REGIONALS
NEW HAVEN, CT (November 13, 2009) - The Dominican College men and Holy Family University women both saw their seasons comes to a close Friday after first round setbacks at their respective NCAA Regional Soccer Tournaments. Both squads fell to Franklin Pierce University.
Dominican fell to 25th-ranked Franklin Pierce, 2-1, Friday
afternoon at Niland Athletic Complex on the campus of Le Moyne
College in Syracuse, N.Y.
The contest featured several exciting plays at both ends of the
field. The Ravens jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a
goal by sophomore midfielder Victor Goncalves. It was the sixth
goal of the season for the 2009 Northeast-10 First-Team selection.
Franklin Pierce took the 1-0 lead into the intermission and held
serve throughout the opening stages of the second half. However,
Dominican, the fourth seed in the six-team tournament, knotted the
game at 1-1 in the 71st minute off an unassisted goal from All-CACC
first team selection, Joe Wright.
The No. 3 seed Ravens responded with a goal two minutes later off
the foot of Tom Reilly. It was his first tally of the season.
The Ravens out-shot Dominican, 24-16, throughout the contest. The
Chargers conclude the season with a 13-4-2 record.
The Holy Family women fell by a 2-0 count against the
Ravens at the University of Bridgeport. The Tigers end the
season with an overall record of 13-9-1 and made its second NCAA
Tournament appearance after winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference (CACC) title last week. It was the team's seventh CACC
championship, which the most for any team at Holy Family.
Franklin Pierce (17-4-1), the Northeast-10 runner-up, broke the
scoreless deadlock with a goal late in the opening half. With 46
seconds on the clock, midfielder Tori Gikas scored on a low-hard
shot into the left corner of the net. She was assisted by
midfielder Gabriela Demoner.
The Ravens got an insurance goal from midfielder Angelika
Johansson, who scored on a breakaway, after receiving a through
ball from forward Shannon Mulvey at 89:15.
In goal, Holy Family's Gina Mansi, the CACC Tournament MVP, did all
she could by making eight saves. Franklin Pierce's Jocelyn Leon
stopped one shot. The Ravens out-shot the Tigers, 22-2.
