NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Gage Daye of Bloomfield College has claimed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week accolades for the week ending Sunday, Dec. 12. Herbert Dennis of Wilmington University was chosen Rookie of the Week.
Daye, a 6-2 senior guard from Newark, N.J., had a huge week in
leading the Deacons to a pair
of conference victories. He averaged 31.0 points, 10.0 rebounds
and 5.0 assists per-game while shooting 48.6-percent (18-for-37)
from the field and 85.7-percent (24-for-28) from the free-throw
line. He recorded 33 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a
win over Caldwell and added 29 points, 12 rebounds and five assists
in a road win at Concordia.
Dennis, a 5-10 freshman point guard from Hurlock, Md., averaged 12.0 points, 5.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per-game in a 1-1 week. He tallied 17 points and four rebounds in a setback to Goldey-Beacom and contributed seven points, nine assists and five rebounds in a win over the University of the Sciences.
Honorable Mention
Garvin McAlister, Post (Sr., G, 5-11, Norwich, CT) - Led Post to a 2-1 week with averages of 17.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.7 rebounds per-game.
Jon Crawford, Goldey-Beacom (Sr., G, 6-4, Pennsauken, NJ) - Averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 assists per-game and shot 14-17 from field in a 2-0 week.
Almin Hodzic, Dominican (Sr., C, 6-10, Budd Lake, NJ) - Averaged 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per-game in a 2-0 week.
Jim Connolly, Philadelphia (So., G, 6-3, Harleysville, PA) - In a win over GBC, tallied 24 points, five rebounds and three assists. Went 6-8 from 3 FG.
CACC Notes
Bloomfield - The Deacons improved to 2-0 in CACC play this week, running their home winning streak to 26 consecutive games with a 104-80 victory over Caldwell December 9. Senior guard Gage Daye headlined the undefeated week, averaging 31 points, 10 rebounds and five assists over the two-game span. Daye tallied game-highs of 33 points against the Cougars, and 29 points in an 86-79 victory over Concordia December 11. Fellow senior Ryan Rodrigues continued the outstanding start to his senior season, averaging 21 points and connecting on nine of his 14 three-point attempts. His 5-5 performance from beyond the arc against Caldwell placed him in a tie for second in CACC history for the best single-game performance from long range. Junior forward Matt Wafula continued his solid play in the low-post, averaging nine points and 5.5 rebounds in the two-game week.
Caldwell - The Cougars opened CACC play last week with three league games, starting with Tuesday’s 69-58 win at Nyack. Junior guard Nik Otovic led Caldwell to its third straight victory with 16 points. On Thursday the Cougars fell to Bloomfield 104-80, with senior forward Antonio Brimley recording 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Caldwell completed the week with a 75-63 loss to Dominican at home on Saturday. This weekend the Cougars host the ECAC Holiday Classic, which begins Saturday with Dominican playing NYIT at 3:00 p.m., followed by Caldwell and Cheyney at 5:00 p.m. Sunday’s schedule has Dominican facing Cheyney at 2:00 p.m., and Caldwell hosting NYIT at 4:00 p.m.
Felician - Felician fell to 0-3 in games decided by four points or fewer.
Goldey-Beacom - Goldey-Beacom’s three victories this season have come by an average margin of 20.7 points.
Holy Family - Holy Family (2-6) dropped a heartbreaker to Kutztown University, 71-67, in the team’s lone game of the week. Despite the loss, Holy Family had four players finish in double-figures including junior Tim Smith who finished with a team-high 18 points. This marked the seventh straight game that Smith has scored in double-figures. Freshmen Alberto Munoz (15), Nate Hodge (13) and Rashaad Sneed (10) also scored in double-figures.
Philadelphia - The Rams went 1-0 for the second straight week and shot 62% in a victory over Chestnut Hill. Shooting high for PhilaU included sophomore guard Jim Connolly with 24 points and junior forward Corey Francisco with 21. The team remains undefeated in the CACC and will take on Wilmington University on Sunday (12/9) at 3:00 p.m. at home.
Post - Garvin McAlister was a catalyst in propelling the Eagles to a 3-1 conference record, strong enough for second place in the CACC North Division. McAlister tallied 23 points and seven rebounds in Post University’s 94-55 victory over Nyack. McAlister had some impressive numbers, shooting 46.2 percent from the floor, 45 percent from long range, and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. He also pulled in 5.7 rebounds per game and added nine assists in the Eagle win against Felician. Post will take the week off for finals before returning to action at home on Sunday, December 19 against St. Anselm. St. Anselm was 2-0 against Post University last season.
USciences - USciences had their four-game winning streak snapped Thursday night with an overtime loss at Millersville. The Devils then dropped their second straight game vs. Wilmington on Saturday. Henry Messinger (Trucksville, Pa.) recorded a career high 19 points and 11 rebounds in the loss at Wilmington. Brian Boyle (Drexel Hill, Pa.) also had a career high with 13 points, shooting 4-4 from three-point range. The Devils return to action on January 4, 2011 when they face Holy Family University.
